Highly recommended when in Athens either on business or on holidays !! don't miss it
We stayed here between the 11- 15 February as a romantic break. The hotel was fantastic, the view from the roof top was amazing, we enjoyed our complimentary bottle of wine up here. Location ideal and the free tea, coffee and biscuits was a lovely added touch .the hotel was very clean and within walking distance to everything. the only negative thing is some guests where smoking in their rooms and you could smell it in the hallways. I would recommend and stay here again.
The 4 of us (2 adults and 2 children ages 17 and 11) booked Hotel Plaka through www.booking.com for 3 nights. From the airport we took a taxi for 35 euros to the hotel.
We got 2 adjoining rooms for the 4 of us, as described in booking.com. We arrived on Monday 13 Feb, after a bad riot in Syntagma square the day/night before. However by the time we arrived, everything was under control. We saw some damages from the riots, including the minor damage on the dining room glass at Hotel Plaka.
The rooms and bathrooms are very clean. The bed and beddings were comfortable, doesnt smell anything (which is good) and the temperature of the room was comfortable. There is a small fridge under the desk in each room.
Internet is not free, it is 8 euros for a day using your own devices. The speed of the internet is good.
Breakfast is included every morning. The usual staples of beans, scrambled eggs and
bacon/sausages. There is a corner for bread and toasts with al the trimmings, and a Greek corner with tomatoes, cucumber, Greek yogurt, honey and boiled eggs. The best thing though - is their "coffee" machine. It is the fancy type that will make 8 different things - capuccinno, mochaccino, hot cocoa, coffee, coffee with milk etc. There is also a coffee machine and orange juice, as well as milk and hot water for tea. The orange juice is very good and fresh. The fancy coffee machine is actually available for you until 5 pm every day outside breakfast, along with cookies. It is very good.
Our room is on the 6th floor, the highest floor for rooms. There is a flight of stairs to the rooftop, with a view of the Acropolis. When we were there, the weather was too cold for us to stay up there. But in the summer, it has got to be nice to be able to drink your coffee with that view!
There is only one elevator and it is small (maximum capacity - 4 people). If you have big luggage, it will fit you and your luggage and that would be it. This is a low season so we never had a problem with having to wait for the elevator but in the high seasons, I can imagine there will be a line to use it (6 floors and maybe 10-12 rooms per floor?)
The location of the hotel is great. It is 2 blocks away from Syntagma Square and about the same distance to Monastiraki square and the metro. We did not take the Metro anywhere since Acropolis is within walking distance (10 mins). There are also a lot of restaurants nearby, as well as shopping. Across the street from the hotel, there is a small Greek church surrounded by shops (Gap, H&M, etc). There is also a flea market near Monastiraki square for souvenirs and knick knacks. Other archeological sites are also nearby - such as the Roman Agora and the Temple of Zeus.
Great little hotel very near all the main tourist atractions. The best thing about this hotel is the little bar area on the roof, with a gorgeous view of the Acropolis (especially at night time, when the lights are up). The rooms were quite comfortable, all the nececities being there. The elevator is a tad small ( not great for people who are closterphobic), but the stairs will give you good excersice. Some of the rooms are ajoining, which is great for a family set up. There is only 1 computer for internet access. The breakfasts in the morning was perfectly fine, in a room that was tastefully decorated. The staff was friendly and helpful (we had an issue with strikes/delayed flights/transfers to port), and they were very happy to help call and sort us out/give us advice. The noise level of the rooms higher up, close to the street side can be a little bit disruptive, so try to get one away from the street side.
Just came back from a 4-day stay in Plaka Hotel and I am pleased to say that it was worth it and we had a good time.
I've been to Athens many times and this was one of the best low budget hotels I stayed mainly because of the location.
Location is very central and really good, (but for us was a problem because of the episodes they had on Sunday and the chemicals thrown in the street by the police-we could not open the window or go out to get something to eat and the only disadvantage of the hotel is that they don't have a restaurant).
The room is clean, beds are really comfy, hot water all the time, the breakfast basic but nice, lovely view of the Acropolis from the roof top, staff are really helpful and everything was nice and easy in a really good price.
Everything anyone could ask for on their vacation :)
I would stay there again!
