if u love the outdoors and love the carribean u will love this adventure, it is perfect for the whole family!!! dont let the "campground" title scare you< it is totally upscale, yes you have to cook your own meals if u want or take the ferry back to island and get pizza hut or just use your money for Heidis @ the beach for the best food!!! I do recomend a big lunch I have been there 2 times (i am not a princess, close to it) but with teen boys it is perfect! i highly recommend this!!! it is totyaly "GREEN" ECO thats why i loveit even more!!! any questions call Jackie --

You will leave the Virgin Island Campground completely satisfied in every way. My husband and I decided to stay in the suite that is offered, opposed to the cabins. We loved our comfy little space and felt at home the moment we walked in the door. We enjoyed spending time on our private front deck relaxing and taking in the spectacular view. We rented bikes from Paul and Deborah and thoroughly enjoyed biking around the island. The campground is a casual, laid back place, just what we needed and were looking for. Paul and Deborah are such nice people I regret not having more time to get to know them. They went out of there way to make sure you were comfortable and happy.

Water Island is with out question the best kept secret in the USVI'S! It's a peaceful, quiet island. The locals are all very friendly and welcoming. Loved Honeymoon Beach, great swimming and food at Heidi's Grill. We also really enjoyed walking and beachcombing on Limestone Beach.

Water Island and The Virgin Island Campground is a place we would definitely go back to!

This is not an all-inclusive luxury resort! But if you are looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of popular tourist spots but still enjoy a Carribean getaway, this might be the choice. During our week's stay we did much walking, exploring the island mostly on foot so bring good hiking shoes. The island has some very nice quiet beaches, with some excellent snorkeling. We stayed in the suite, which included our own bathroom and kitchenette, and found the accomodations to be excellent. We had to campground to ourselves, and checked out all the tent cottages. Any would have been sufficient for us. The staff is friendly and helpful. Plan ahead for food and beverages because the nearest real grocery store is a ferry ride away on St. Thomas. This can add up quickly so plan for that expense ($10 per person round trip).

Water Island is the lovely and undeveloped smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. A rare gem of beaches and snorkeling without the "tourism" of shopping or casinos. The primary beach is Honeymoon beach, with Heidi's grill for lunch and Joe's bar for a drink. It is also where cruise ships bring in boat loads of passengers on a daily basis. The beach can become congested, even loud from noon to around 2pm. Your best bet is to head to the farther end (the left) and wait it out. You can also take the hike to Limestone beach, wear proper shoes, this is not a walk to be done in sandles or flip flops. The reward is great beach combing. You can still snorkel, just head to the left and you will find a calm place for entering the water. There is also Sprat's Bay, which was always empty when we went there. There is a "gated" community, and some of them can be rather unpleasent. Best to enter by boat and avoid the trouble.
Now for the Virgin Island's Campground - I was introduced to the term "glamping" and it is glamour camping. No need to bring any camping gear, and you will be staying in a lovely cabin, sleeping in a comfortable bed and plugging in all your gadgets (but really leavel them at home). There are no grocery stores on the island, when we were there Pirates Ridge was closed, so you can go shopping ahead of time or use a provisioning company to deliver food for you. Food is expensive on the island, it cost two of us 300 for the week to eat well.
I highly recommend the VI Campground, it is clean, easy to get to, and an easy walk to all of the beaches, with Honeymoon being a short walk away. There are only six cabins, and a very social or private place, depending on your preference.

We have spent 2 spring breaks now at VI Campgrounds and can't wait to return again. It's such a beautiful island, and still feels untouched by the heavy tourism of the surrounding islands. We found it because a friend recommended Maho campgrounds on St. John, but they were all booked. Now we are so grateful! After seeing the hordes of people who go to St. John's every year, we've never made the effort to go there. Getting to Water Island is easy; it takes 10 minutes from St. Thomas. The snorkeling is outstanding. The cabins are clean, well designed and have everything you need. Each one has its own little balcony with chairs overlooking the ocean. We have enjoyed getting to know the other people staying at the campground...with only 6 cabins, it encourages a small, intimate and friendly group, we watch each other's kids, etc. I was nervous about the food situation...there is just a lunch place on the beach (which has fabulous, huge delicious burgers), but it turned out to not be a big issue. We planned out some dinners and breakfast and packed food for those meals, bought some perishables and rum in St. Thomas. Strong bug spray is recommended for evenings. If you want to fall asleep listening to the sound of the ocean, insects and lizards all around you, this is the place. If you want an upscale hotel with lots of diversions, this probably isn't for you.
