“Great way to get to know Reykjavik”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

My wife and I stayed here on two different occasions while we were in Iceland and I would definitely recommend this place. As others have mentioned, it is definitely not what I would call luxury, but it was a nice and well appointed apartment. The fact that it is an apartment, and not a hotel room, is really what set this place off in my opinion. The location is amazing; it sits just down the hill from the huge church that I'm sure you've seen pictures of if you researched Reykjavik, its right down the street from some nice shops and restaurants, it is right around the corner from a very cool pond that is perfect for taking pictures of... AND there is a school right near by, so you really get the feeling that you're IN the community and a part of it... and not just a tourist. In the mornings all the kids are walking to school, people are out running in the park... its awesome, and really made us enjoy Reykjavik a lot more then I thought I would (I'm not a big city type person... not that Reykjavik is a "big" city). This was also the cheapest place we stayed in all of Iceland ($75)... which was a nice bonus.

The only thing that I didn't care for was the strong sulfur smell from the hot water, which is apparently caused from the fact that they get their hot water from geothermal sources in the city... we didn't experience this anywhere else in Iceland though. The bathroom was a little cramped, but to be honest, it was this way everywhere we stayed in Iceland. They have, what I called, studio bathrooms... the shower is seperated from the rest of the bathroom just buy a curtain; you could literally sit on the toilet and take a shower if you were so inclined. Again though, this is evidently an Icelandic design as ALL the places we stayed (from guest houses to regular hotels) were setup this way. The airport in Reykjavik is also close by, and the planes fly directly over the apartment which made it a bit noisey in the evenings, but the planes seemed to stop around 9PM and we never were bothered by them while trying to sleep... it really wasn't an issue, but you should be aware of it.

If you're going to have a rental car, the parking is relatively easy, but you'll have to figure out the one-way streets around the apartment. It is easy to navigate, we spent about 10 minutes the first day just driving around figuring out which streets you can go down and which you can't. I got a parking ticket the first day because I didn't realize I was parked in a pay spot (the meters there aren't at every spot like in the US, there is one main meter you get your ticket from), and I over paid the second time because I didn't fully understand the meter. LOL There is a language button on the meter though... which I didn't notice until the second day. Use it, it'll make your life simple. :)

Speaking of the rental car, the directions to the place from the airport are good... when you actually have them. I somehow managed to lose them from the States to Iceland, but was able to find the apartments by navigating using the big church at the top of the hill. If you get lost, just make your way to the giant church (you can't miss it) and then go down the hill towards the lake and you'll find it.

Room Tip: The one bedroom apartment was perfect for my wife and I. Look for the "Bonus" grocery stor...

Thank you for another great review.

The Reykjavik domestic airport mainly uses two runways. The one that brings flights
over the city centre is thankfully much less used, but this depend on wind direction.
Also as you noticed, jets are not allowed to use this airport - only lighter planes -and there is no traffic at night.

The hot water sometimes does smell of sulphur. Icelanders drill for hot water like some other nations drill for oil. The whole capital is heated this way, as are the open air swimming pools - which you should not miss on your visit. It is great swimming in heated outdoor pools even when it is snowing, and to sit in the hot pots watching snowflakes drift down to your face.

We are upgrading the bathrooms. They now have glass partitions instead of curtains and heated floors as well!

“Outstanding accomodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Clean, well supplied and excellent location. We stayed in Suite 40 which appears to have undergone renovation since everything appeared new. Bathroom was no problem for us.
Arriving from Seattle you arrive at KEF approx 0700 and we got into Reyjavik about 830. The manger let us store our bags and ourselves in a smaller unoccupied apt until our apt became available in the early afternoon. As it was cool and rainy this was a blessing. Good wireless, coffee, tea and sugar supplied in room. Daily cleaning.

The location must be Reyjavik's equivalent of the upper east side. A couple of blocks from downtown, adjacent to a pond, park, parliament and embassies.

Be aware that you reserve a class of apartment and you may not get the exact number apartment you request. Since there are only a few apartments and they appear very similar within class I do not believe this would be a problem. The apartment we were assigned was actually in a better location than the one we had requested.

I highly recommend Castle Apartments.

“Great Place, but not luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

We were in suite 20. The suite was very simple, clean and cozy, but definitely not "luxury". The shower was a little weird (by North American standards), but not a big deal. The apartments are located close to the downtown core, off a main street. Bars, shopping, restaurants, waterfront etc are just quick little stroll away. Public bus stop is just outside the apartment too. It's definitely worth the money. We were very happy with our stay, but we weren't expecting much. All the appliances were old, but they were clean and they worked...what more do you want? If you want fancy new gadgets with marble counter tops, you'll be disappointed. If you want something simple, clean and close to everything, you'll enjoy this place.

Thank you for your great review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. We are upgrading the apartments and apt. 20 will soon get a new bathroom with a heated floor and new appliances and other appliances will also be replaced. This will include a large flat screen TV etc. We fully intend to live up to the luxury part of our name in the near future :)

“Small Gem in the heart of Reyjavik”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

My fiance and I spent a vacation in Reyjavik early October. The location is ideal, walking distance to the city center, and the bus station. The apartments themselves are clean, beds are very comfortable and while there is no concierge, the emails and maps the the owners provide more than make up for it. Plus, you can make a trip to Europe so affordable between their full kitchens and reasonable pricing. Even when we missed our bus back to the airport, the owner called the bus company on our behalf to request them back. Overall, our stay was all we expected and more. We plan on coming back to Iceland, and this hotel/apartment is the only place we will stay at.
