we had a small problem with our sea view room on the top floor but dont be put off from choosing these rooms, the view from rm 405 was great it overlooked the marina to the east and got sun first thing. Because of our problem that neaded to be sorted we were given an upgrade to a superior room on the 2nd floor where the view was not quite so good but the room itself was much nicer with more modern furniture, a bigger balcony, tea and coffee, robes etc. So the staff could not be faulted problem sorted and we were happy.
As for the food, the choice at breakfast was great, full english, freshly made omlettes and pancakes, cerials, porage and everything else you would expect. The full english was a bit too oily for our taste, so if we fancied a soft boiled egg on toast we just asked the waiter and he was pleased to get the kitchen to do two 4 min. eggs just for us.
As we were only half board, we didnt use the facilities at lunch time and not being drinkers we never used the bar. So as for the evening meal we were quite happy with the choices, the soup was different every night, the salad buffet was varried a little with plenty of choice. We liked to have a small portion of fish with rice and then a small meat coarse with veg. the deserts were very nice and hard to choose which one to go for, could easily put on weight.
The main reason for us going to Cyprus was for the walking and this Hotel is quite well situated with an easy bus ride into Limassol where a bus to the troodos mountains leaves outside the old hospital at 9.30 returning from the top at 3.30. We spent about three hours on buses that day all for 2 euros each for an all day ticket, thats got to be a bargain.
The day we did this trip it was quite misty on the top with about 3 foot of snow and very cold, however we did walk the 6km down the Old Platres Road and followed Kryos Potamos ('Cold River') down past the Caledonian Falls to Platres crossing the stream many times on stepping stones, the last half hour in heavy hail. We were glad to reach the bus stop and go into the cafe opposite, to dry out, have coffee and toasted sandwich with quite a lot of banter with the owner and an English couple who now live in Cyprus. When the snow melts we will be back to do further walks in this area. Another great walk we did started with a taxi drive up to just short of Kellaki at the turn off to Prastio, he needed the work and charged us just 20 euro, a snip.
This was a long 15km walk, we passed from rugged mountainside to gentle countryside enjoyed the varied scenery - a deep gorge, a vast dam, normally dry but because of the rain this winter full up which made for spendid views. We passed the village of Phinikaria and reached Yermasoyia after 6 hours including stops. we caught the bus to Limassol and then to the Atlantica Hotel. Another good day out was to Akrotiri, where, at the Information Centre we were privaleged to see about 300 Pink Flamingo on the salt lake, also a quick view of a Marsh Harrier and rare or endemic flora. Unfortunately for us the bus drivers went on strike due to a pay dispute this lasted for the last 5 days of our holiday. I'm sure most tourists wouldn't mind paying a bit more than 2 Euros for an all day ticket so the drivers could get a little extra in their pay packet. So the rest of our walks were more local, a strole along the prom in either direction, a climb up to the archaelogical site of Acropolis of ancient Amathous 11th cent. BC - 4th cent. AD just 10mins from the Hotel.
Finally a walk that we will not forget was along the B1 past the power station and turn right to a chapel Agios Epifanios where we saw people walking dogs everywhere, when we asked we were told about a dog sanctury close to the chapel and being fond of dogs we went to see the place, a big barn that housed about 200 dogs. We ended up taking 2 dogs for an hours walk. Cellice an Italian Segugio very shy and in desperate need of a loving home and a friendy lab who would make a nice pet. On our return we took two more dogs for another hours walk. So If anyone reading this likes dogs and would like to walk in an interesting area with a four legged friend you would be doing them a great favour.
