The Giltar is a classic, old school seaside hotel, in the process of reinventing itself. Some of the rooms have been refurbished. Others, when we visited in September 2013, were still awaiting an upgrade. Prices reflect the difference though - for the new ones - they're probably a bit on the high side for what you get. We had one of the new rooms and it was perfectly OK, if a bit small for £100+ per night out of high season. The best thing about it was the view across the sea to Caldey Island. The worst aspect was the fact that, on two of the three nights we were there, wedding receptions were in full swing into the early hours. Even though we were on the second floor and the party venue was in the basement, the festivities spilled out into the street and didn't make for a good night's sleep. Staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were adequate, if unremarkable. And the hotel car park is very small, for the number of rooms. If it's full, you'll be lucky to find parking anywhere nearby that doesn't cost. But the location - only a few moments walk from the old town - is perfect.
Ask for one at the front with a sea view.
