I'll be honest, this isn't really my kind of hotel.
It is, however, unmitigated luxury in a truly epic location.
Resting right on the edge of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) it's a top quality hotel in every respect with excellent decoration, service (for my taste, I must say, a little intrusive, but if you like that sort of thing I'm sure it's great), location and restaurant.
I was there on business with a colleague for just one night so the long preamble from the perfectly nice check-in lady about all the facilities and sights in Vevey was a waste of time for us and I don't need instruction in how to use a TV or really need a dozen different options of pillows (the standard ones were great, I slept really well).
The restaurant was pretty good, I suspect some of our fellow eaters were locals, although it's as expensive as you'd expect a 5 star hotel restaurant to be and, again, I felt fussed over, which isn't what I want from a good hotel.
I had a 'town view' room, but that rewarded me with lovely views of the mountains, which mist on the lake didn't allow so I didn't really lose out here.
As I said, the bed was comfy and delivered a great nights sleep. I thought the room a decent size (not massive, but roomy for a double) and it was beautifully furnished and decorated. There are 600 TV channels to chose from (apparently!), but I only put the TV on briefly in the morning to get the news while I dressed.
There was plenty of hot water at a good pressure for the shower (no bath in my room) in the roomy bathroom (although I suspect women applying makeup might find the subdued light there a little gloomy) and I got my shoes polished gratis overnight.
If you want a taste of old-fashioned luxury and very attentive service, it's very hard to find fault with the Grand Hotel du Lac and even though it's not quite to my personal taste I would welcome a return there any time.
