I guess coming from a totally different tropical world, Kirkenes is the closest to a wintery wonderland for us. Landing in a the airport amidst a land of white, we quickly took the airport bus to Thon hotel where receptionist was friendly and helpful to let us store luggage while we waited for Snowhotel driver who was jovial and humorous with anecdotes. All the snow hotel staff we met were friendly and really seemed to enjoy their job. They helped us with thermal suits, boots, gloves, showed us how to use the insulated sleeping bags, gave us a tour of the premises. Dinner was pleasant mingling with like-minded travelers and food such as reindeer sausages and seafood was tasty. Overnight in our very own -5 deg ice carved room on ice bed sounds like a fantasy. Each room features a different theme and we chose the one with a Northern Star at the foot of our bed and a Snowman carved on wall. My favorite was spending time with the strong huskies at their habitat. Hot showers felt great and there's even a sauna. Makes for a great first time! Hmm considering if I should visit the other snow/ice hotels if I get the chance in future :) Oh yes we took Alaskan King Crab Safari which was worth it, though not the eye opener we were hoping for (going out in a boat to catch from sea). Wished we could do Husky Sledding and Snowmobiles with them too but we didn't have time.
