“Very good surprise in such a big city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

We booked this hotel following some recommendations found on hotels.com and trip advisor and we were really happy to be there.
This is a huge change with respect to the big and anonymous hotels you can find in Sydney CBD.
The house is lovely and you feel more in a relative's home than in an hotel.

The only negative point was the A/C that was not powerful enough for this day of heat in Sydney.
Nevertheles, we would definitely come back there if we have the chance to come back to Sydney.

“Clean, Comfortable and old fashioned but a little average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

I stayed here because it was just around the corner from the Australian Institute of Laser Eye Surgery where I had Lasik Surgery. You can get a discounted rate from the hotel if you are booked in to have Lasik Surgery and because of it's close proximity to the clinic it was a good choice on this occasion. However, it is in the commercial district of North Sydney so there is not much around in terms of restaurants, shopping or night life. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance up the road and about a 10 minute walk to central North Sydney where there are a few shops and more choice for eating in the day but forget about it at night.
Although the price is quite reasonable (I paid $150 a night) the hotel is quite old and run down and not my cup of tea. The rooms were large enough and comfortable but the first room I stayed in with a crappy fat back TV which was too snowy to watch so they moved me to another room which had a small 20" LCD which is a bit silly in this day and age and given the price of TV's now. The bathroom is very average with no real space to put things so it's a little akward but one thing I did like was the old fashined shower head which had good water pressure (just like home). The rooms have a poorly stocked mini bar but it's nice to have a fridge in the room to use. Wireless internet is available for the usual exuberant amount that hotels charge. The staff were nice enough and there is no restaurant on premises but they offer a cheap continental breakfast which is very average and not recommended.
I wouldn't recommend staying here unless you were going to have Lasik surgery and needed a hotel nearby or had a business trip which required you to stay in this particular area of North Sydney.

“Perfect”

This hotel was perfect for our needs for a one night stay. Billy on reception was very pleasant and easy to deal with. The hotel itself, though old was absolutely immaculate and of course the age of the hotel was an attraction as much of its charm has been maintained. The light filled atrium/conservatory style breakfast dining area is very nice and the rooms are large and also very clean.
Very handy for our needs, no diner provided at night but has a delivery menu for many restaurants in the area and pub and other food in walking distance. Would be happy to stay again if the need arose. Also had lovely large sitting room with magazines etc at front of hotel for relaxing and reading.

“What a nice surprise in North Sydney”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

Delightful old mansion conversion in McLaren Street and we were pleased to be issued to Room 27, on the ground floor, just off reception. No stairs to climb. Very welcoming reception, and as our room was not quite ready, we were ushered into the lounge and offered refreshments and a read of the Sunday papers.
The location is great for business in North Sydney, however it is a bit of a hike from the railway station, and up hill. North Sydney is dead on the weekend. If you are looking for somewhere to eat, head to Milson't Point. This residence is very well priced. Room 27 is huge, with original features and an enormous bathroom and twin shower (!) Could do with more shelf space in bathroom and shower - no room for shampoo, conditioner, and other toiletries from home.

“A quaint old place - but comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

Arrived early but could get access to our room which was great.
There is no lift so if you have large / heavy bags take them out of your car at the entrance to the hotel - rather than struggle with them up the stairs from the car park. Likewise - ask for a room on the ground floor. I'm sure the staff would help you get cases up stairs if needs be. (just a friendly word of advice.)
Located in a very hand spot - easy walking distance to the hub of Miller Street etc in North Sydney.
A spacious room that was rather tired and a bit run down - but you could open a balcony door and let in the fresh air!
All the staff were friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was basic but fine.
Watch out for the carpark! It is tiny - and you could possibly be "parked in" as a tandem parking system operates. It is undercover - but not secure. It is first in best dressed!

Room Tip: Get a quiet room at the back of the hotel
