Kookaburra Inn was exactly what we were hoping for. A nicely maintained quiet place in a fairly central location. No fuzz about arriving a bit later than expected. The key was waiting at the office door with a friendly note. This was very much appreciated, even though we still met the friendly managers. A comfy bed, towels, fridge and a sink in the room added to our satisfaction. Thanks!
I stayed twice at the kookaburra - in may 2009 for a week and now for a couple of weeks between june/july 2010.
Facilities: collective toilets and kitchens are always clean and are sufficient to support the number or guests. Bedrooms are not to big - they have a sink, a bed, a chair and a place to hang your clothes. It didn't bother me since I spent most of the time out exploring the city.
Location: if you are a good walker, it takes 15 minutes to the city centre. If not, there are buses nearby that take you there (check at the translink website). There is also a big supermarket 5 minutes away.
Environment: Quiet and friendly. Not a good place for backpackers willing to meet people and socialize but I really appreciate being able to sleep well without noise from other guests most nights. Wendy, the owner, is very nice. The staff helped me finding transport options and I was able to leave my big suitcase at the hostel while travelling to North Stradbroke Island and the Gold Coast.
Verdict: Its cheap, nice and friendly and suited me much better than the backpackers around within the same range of price.
The place was such a dump we refused to stay here. We first arrived and were unable to get into the building because it was locked. We waited outside with our bags constantly ringing the doorbell wondering if we had the wrong location because it looked a lot different than it did online. Someone in sweat pants opened the door with two large dogs behind him. We walked up to the reception area and were taken down to our room. The entire building smelt of the two large dogs that were freely walking around the premises. Now, I truly am a dog lover, but not the smell of them. Nor do I want have them in my rented accomodation while I'm on holidays. We left and were still charged the nights accomodation. My daughter tried to ask for the money back and was hung up by the manager, David. Awful place to stay paired with awful service. Do not stay here!
The hosts are extremely friendly and helped whenever I had a question concering tours, sights, bus timetables..
The rooms are fairly basic and small, but that´s just all I needed for sleeping. The price is great value! There are several kitchens and a living room to relax. Free tea and coffee is offered. Everything was perfectly clean.
The hostel is located in a quiet beautiful area 10 minutes walk away from chinatown, t20 minutes to the citycenter, and 15 minutes to the brisbane transit center.
I just had a great time there and felt comfortable with all the suport and care of the hosts.
