I recommend this hotel, particularly for couples. The rooms are a little expensive but you certainly get what you pay for.
If you're looking for a spot around the Casino/Southbank area, you can't go wrong with the location.
My only (small) criticism is they were a little underprepared for peak leaving times but it might have just been when I was there! I'd stay again.
My friend and I stayed here, we partied in the Casino most of the night, stumbled up to our room and then just got up in time to make it out of the room! It was extremely comfortable, enormous lush beds, wet room showers, very funky and modern. Great city center location with most attractions within walking distance, plus heaps of tram stops near by.
The Crown Metropol was fantastic. Rooms were perfect. Clean stylish and attention to detail was great. The bathroom does not have a bath, which I though was odd but everything else was great. Service perfect. There is a link into the casino which is nice for evenings. Situation is great, walking distance to the city centre. One thing, was internet VERY expensive, this could be a Melbourne thing. We just bought a pay as you go sim and used my phone for tethering.
I've been wanting to try Metropol for a while, and when Wotif offered the Metropol as one of their mystery hotels at $200/night, I jumped at the chance and booked a Valentine's Day stay.
(Yes, I know you're not supposed to know which hotel you're booking at - but really, which other city hotel does 'Luxe' rooms?)
Before arriving, I emailed to confirm the cost of access to the club lounge, and the cost of upgrading my room type. To my surprise, Elise in Reservations confirmed that 'as you have booked on Wotif.com, no upgrades are available,' along with the lounge costs.
I thought that was odd, but hey, each hotel to their own.
(I imagine reservations thought I wanted a free upgrade, but I unambiguously asked for *prices* of room upgrades.)
On arrival to the hotel, I noticed the porter was very busy. He was so very busy that he was unable to make any eye contact, or greet us or any other guest as we walked in the front doors. In fact, no-one welcomed us to the hotel. Any time we walked in. Or out. Ever.
The check-in wait was minimal, and Emma's arrival schpeil was cheerful, easy and quick. Surprisingly, she offered to upgrade us and gave costs for each upgrade.
When I referenced the email I'd received prior to check-in, Emma sort of apologised, but didn't offer a comprehensive reason for the conflicting information. She was able to confirm upgrade prices and club opening hours off the top of her head.
Upgrade to City View Luxe completed, we went on our merry way to the 15th floor. I noticed that no direction to the lifts was given - and they are somewhat hidden.
The room is very large for your standard/standard+view room type, and I do love the neutrally stylish decor. The bed was prettily made-up, and very firm. If you like to sink into or jump about on your bed, you may not like this one.
I question whether the view is worth the $50 upgrade. I've added some pictures of our actual view - mostly the car-park. Ehhh.....not a spectacular view, even at night. Maybe it's better from a high floor.
The bathroom is average, and I really question the designer's sanity in regards to that gap between room wall and bathroom wall. Bizarre and unnecessary.
The wall between toilet and shower is frosted, but you can still see through it. The shower isn't particularly amazing - I can't actually remember anything in particular about it, so perhaps nondescript is the best word.
The minibar seemed well stocked. There was only one coffee bag, and although I'm sure I could have called for more after my partner took this, I'm not that precious. There were sachets of instant had I needed a coffee that bad.
I love their pool. Wow. Stunning at sunset, although you may have to fight other guests to get a bit of wall to rest on. The spa was okay. The pool area is delightful, and the daybeds and lounges are quite quirky in a completely enclosed pool on the 27th floor. I can imagine dozing the day away in the sun here.
Room service was quick at 10pm. They called our room back to deliver the unfortunate news that they were out of chai latte's, per our order. My partner had a latte and ice-cream sundae instead, so it was a win-win situation. The sundae wasn't worth the $16, but room service in five-star hotels never is.
Check-out was quick at 7:30am, and Nicholas (?I think?) was very pleasant. Quick and efficient.
Overall, this wasn't a particularly romantic stay, even though Valentine's day was referenced two or three times (by staff) while we stayed at the hotel.
Having conflicting information given by staff isn't really good enough, ditto the non-service by the porter at the front of the hotel. I probably won't stay again, or recommend.
The exact phrase I used when describing my stay was "It's okaaay, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price."
Sorry, Metropol. A romantic fail.
