“Great location, good quality/price.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Stayed ther on two occasions in December 2011 and appreciated reasonably sized rooms, well equipped, silent air con, and outstanding buffet breakfast. Younger staff on reception not terribly welcoming or well trained (instead of offering porterage for our heavy cases, we had to request and dig him out of the back office). However, more experienced lady couldn't have been more charming or responsive. We were able to leave our baggage in storage free of charge so we could take a side trip to Margaret River. Parking in the street overnight is safe and free between 6.00 p.m. and 8.30 a.m. next day and there is nearby daytime garage parking nearby.
Free wi-fi, tea and coffee in rooms. The hotel has rooms on the roof and a small herbal roof garden. Pity it has no seating to take a little sun. Outside decoration is a striking if quaint, burgundy and cream. Inside the restaurant and hotel there is Swedish decor, paintings and artefacts. Even a Christmas Goat in true Swedish pre-Christmas style. The elevator dates back to the 1950's and needs a little negotiating with lots of bags. However, would stay there again since it is in a good location and reasonably priced for a downtown "boutique" hotel with a great breakfast.
One can have coffee and cakes from their downstairs cafe on the sidewalk.

“Not All Perfect”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

In an age of bland hotel chains, it is good to have somewhere unique and independent such as the mildly quirky Miss Maud’s hotel – though there are clearly problems in trying to put modern hotel facilities in a 100 year old building.

On the plus side, the staff were always helpful (though one or two them could perhaps have smiled a little more!) and the breakfasts (included in the price) are probably the best in the state, if not the whole country! The hotel is also in an ideal location for seeing the sights: on the edge of the business district, it is easy and pleasant walking to the shopping malls, the Swan River, the railway station, the museums and the theatres and concert halls.

The downside was the noise, mostly from outside the hotel. This appears to be the area where the over-rich and under-dressed go for a good night out, and even with the windows tightly shut you may find your sleep being disturbed by them (unless, of course, this is your scene and you want to join in the party.) If your room is close to the lift lobbies, you may also find yourself disturbed by the clunky doors of this eccentric system rattling at all sorts of hours. And by the way, its not always a level walk from the lift to some rooms, so you may have to lift your luggage up and down stairs (or hear other guests trying to do so!)

Also be aware that – despite what the brochures say, not every superior room has a bath: if that is important for you, check what you are getting.

So would we go back there? On balance, probably not. We’d probably prefer to sacrifice the character it offered, and go for somewhere where we had a better chance of getting some sleep!

“Quirky Lift”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We recently had a very short stay at this Hotel.

We arrived from the UK in the wee hours and needed somewhere basically to sleep for a few hours. Consequently we were looking for something "cheap and cheerful". When we arrived we were checked in with a smile and the miniscule elevator was explained to us in regards to keeping it open etc. As we were very jetlagged and had a lot of luggage we were not really amused at the time as we had to make two trips up to our floor. However, the room, although dated was fine and the bed quite comfy. We managed to get a few hours sleep and then had a lovely breakfast in the Miss Mauds restaurant - which we thoroughly enjoyed.

In summary, this is a good hotel for a reasonably priced stopover and if you like quirkiness - this is it. The location for walks into the City, nearby sights and public transport is excellent too.

“A little bit of Sweden in the middle of Perth”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Having lived in Perth some time ago, I had heard of Miss Maud's, but not stayed there before the Christmas/New Year week recently. The hotel is well located for the city centre and most transport is a moderate walk away or accessible using the CAT buses (a useful feature of Perth).

Although very smail (not really large enough for two people), the room was spotlessly clean and included all the usual amenities and furnished in '70's chic. A major problem, though, was the lack of sound proofing of the neighboring plumbinig, and I was woken in the middle of the night a number of times by what sounded like someone taking a shower next to my head - very intrusive!!

Breakfast was included in the tariff and it was great, with suitably festive Swedish decorations for the time of year, adding a festive touch. The restaurant staff were particularly friendly.

A major drawback, as mentioned in other reviews were the steps leading up to the ancient lift, which were difficult to negotiate on my own. I also had to drag my bags down from the first floor, when checking out as it appeared that the lift wasn't working. "Oh, the door down here probably wasn't closed", was the comment of the receptionist when I informed her of the issue - not very helpful when I was standing on the first floor lift lobby.

Overall, the good probably equalled the not so good and Miss Maud's suited me for the time I was in Perth this summer.

Room Tip: Look at the room size, if possible, many are very small. Also, see if you can find out which rooms...
