“Good location”

Stayed at this apartment hotel for four nights including New Year's Eve. Depending on your needs this may be a suitable location and accommodation option.

Staff are helpful and polite and assisted with any queries efficiently.

We had a one bedroom apartment that was compact with all the necessary facilities. A kitchen with all the necessary equipment including dishwasher, dinnerware, cutlery, glasses and saucepans, etc. There was also a good sized fridge along with (in a cupboard) washing machine and dryer. The lounge room came with a reasonable size lounge suite/sofa, TV and DVD player.

The bedroom was a little oaky for two people with an adjoining walk in wardrobe with plenty of space. The bed was small (double) had an uncomfortable mattress. The bathroom adjoined the bedroom and had a reasonable shower and toilet. The shower did not drain well, as there was no slope in the floor to assist drainage and so had to be careful about not covering the whole bathroom floor with water.

One disappointing element is that the apartment was not serviced once during our four night stay. A full service was not needed, however it would have been useful if the rubbish bin had been emptied and perhaps some basic cleaning. I've stayed at other apartments in the same area and they offered a full service daily.

The apartment hotel is well located with many restaurants, cafes, bars and sightseeing options close by.

“beautiful view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

The hotel I chose for the possibility of a beautiful outlook to the will of the photo. I was in the 21 floor which was enough for a nice view. The room was very cozy and clean. receptionist was also willing to help with everything I needed.

“Why book a hotel room when you can have a luxurious, spacious apartment for the same price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

The Metropolis Apartments in Auckland became a welcome home away from home for my 22-year-old daughter and I last month when complications after a medical procedure forced us to radically change our accommodation and travel plans. We were hit with hefty cancellation charges for our airfares but thanks to Cliff Morgan, general manager of the Metropolis and co-owner of Luxy Apartments in Auckland, we were able to be flexible with our accommodation arrangements without the usual penalties.
When our first apartment choice turned out to be completely inappropriate for our needs, Cliff was just amazing. He collected us from the hospital and took us to the Metropolis on Kitchener Street where we were not only secure, comfortable, cosy and close to medical services, but we also had a magnificent view of Auckland and the waterfront, and access to a gym, pool, spas and sauna. Cliff was very compassionate and went out of his way to look after us, knowing we had had a scary post-operative experience and we needed to stay in Auckland for an indefinite period to be close to the hospital.
Our apartment on the 28th floor was magnificent – it was air-conditioned at a very comfortable temperature but we could also have ample fresh air thanks to double sliding doors opening on to a large balcony from the lounge and bedroom. The well-equipped kitchen had a full oven, fridge and dishwasher (not just a drawer), microwave, marble benches and ample cooking and eating utensils. The washing machine, drier, iron and ironing board were put to good use (I had a lot of time on my hands in between nursing duties!) as were the free wireless internet and two flat-screen television sets. The beds were very comfortable and we really appreciated the feather duvets, quality linen, pillows and towels . . . just like home. The apartment was spotless and well-supplied with bathroom, laundry and kitchen necessities and was fully serviced once half way through our eight-day stay which was just right.
Once my daughter was on the mend, the full advantages of staying at the Metropolis became even more apparent. We were directly above High Street, Chancery Lane and Vulcan Lane with some of the best boutiques and cafes in New Zealand, two blocks from Queens Street and five minutes’ walk from the picturesque Auckland waterfront where many of the Rugby World Cup social activities are to take place. It’s a lovely stroll along the waterfront and next time we visit, we will no doubt be able to make full use of the facilities.
Why book a hotel room when you can have a luxurious, spacious apartment for the same price . . . or even less if you stay longer than three or four days.

“Marble floors and walls, granite worktop, fantastic views, great location.. but”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

We've been wanting to visit this apartment hotel for some time as it is a unique newish, Deco style building on an otherwise bland Auckland skyline. If you've read anything else I've reviewed you'll know that going to different hotels is a hobby for me. We booked through a company who appear to rent several apartments in the block not the hotel itself so this was a private apartment rented out when not in use.

You enter the hotel from the rear (opposite Albert park) and walk along an enormous cream marble foyer / hallway to the lifts. This sets the elegant tone of this building. The lifts themselves are beautiful! Our room was 2306 on the 23rd floor facing towards Auckland harbour. There is no restaurant in the building but there are two cafe / restaurants at the base of the building and several a short distance away. There is a rather nice spa/pool/sauna/gym on floor 8.

This 1 bedroom apartment consists of three compartments rather than rooms. You enter through a kitchen and bathroom area, pass through into a lounge and dining area and then into the bedroom area with the only large floor to ceiling window opening to a small balcony. The only division between these compartments are some glassed sliding doors betwen the lounge-dining and the bedroom, but why you would ever close them is a mystery as you would shut off the only window.

The kitchen has a reddish-orange granite worktop and teak veneer kitchen doors. Someone had cleaned the worktop rather unsuccessfully as the water had filled the cutlery tray beneath it! They had also missed some reddish brown pieces of mince above it which I discovered when mopping up the water and trying to work out where it had come from!! Water on the floor suggested the clean might have been recent and rushed.

The bathroom is half tiled with a beige cream well veined marble. There is a separate bath and shower. Beware the evil shower head on the bath! Turn the dial on the bath to the wrong mysterious symbol and your pants get soaked!! This was not the source of the water mentioned above in case you might think this.

The overall feel of the apartment is good but on closer inspection I noticed that the oval coffee table hadn't been dusted for a very long time, surprising considering it is the most prominent item in the centre of the room. The switch for the bedroom light in the lounge behind the TV had vanished into the housing, luckily there was another switch in the bedroom itself. The hem on the curtains to the left was hanging down. Whether this was due to dry cleaning them and this curtain had not been restitched I don't know, but a shame that this spolied the luxurious appearence. The beige seating was clean and pleasant but the wooden furniture looked battered. There was a repair to the smoke detector above the bed which had prominent scratch marks around it that had not been repainted. A hatch in the ceiling in the kitchen area was covered in dirty fingerprints.

The apartment may have double glazing but we don't think it is hush glass as even 23 floors up the noise from screaming bars, loud revving engines and louder police sirens woke me several times on the Friday and Saturday nights we were there. The other hotel I have reviewed on the same road did not suffer from this noise so it is more a "feature" of the building than the area.

We were only staying a couple of nights and so we didn't say anything but we hope that the owner will wonder why the service only appeared to include a quick vacuum and changing the sheets and towels.

There's always a "but" in most of my reviews because I am actually looking for faults in the hope that the business will pick up their game BUT in this case overall I would say that we would come here again. BUT next time we will book through the hotel itself so that if there are any issues we can complain directly to them.

Room Tip: It may be best to book directly with the hotel than through an agent. Specify a floor 23 or above.

“Fawlty Towers”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2011

Note, I stayed here for a lengthy period of time in 2009....this review is well overdue!

My stay went from one farce to another. It started with everything in the apartment being sticky to touch. Hardly any cutlery was to be found, with a non working kettle and a black pot to cook with. The bathroom was leaking and the phone didn't work....not even to call reception. When temporarily moved to another room, which was not much better, 2 strange men walked into the apartment at 4am. They had been given a key to the same apartment!!!! Luckily they left as soon as they realised, but it could have been a tragic outcome.
I spoke to the manager who did not apologise and said it had been a computer glitch. And when she was asked to touch the sticky surfaces she admitted it wasn't up to scratch but suggested I was being a little precious. She promised to have it cleaned but when I returned to the apartment at the end of the day, only those surfaces I pointed out had been cleaned, nothing else.
She also promised the phone would be working within a few days as would the internet services. The phone still didn't work when I left....6 months later! I had to ask for the internet to be fixed about 5 times before they finally got another resident who was good with computers to sort it out. Is this Fawlty Towers? And when I complained, I was told if I didn't like it I could leave.

The only saving grace was 2 of the reception staff who were absolutely fantastic, together with the fact that the location was exactly what I needed, was the only reason I continued to stay there for the time I did. I would never ever go back again.
