We recently booked for 3 nights in a 2 bedroom unit at this motel but checked out after 2 nights.
The room we had was so dated in its decor it does not reflect the 5 star rating on the motels street sign. The arm chairs that another reviewer said were great weren't in our room, they didn't even look like they sat upright and the sofa felt like a spring had gone, uncomfortable.
The furnishings were very old and the towels in the bathroom were like using sandpaper to dry with they were so thin. The toaster toasted on one side only so you had to turn the bread around to do the other side. We could not get the wall heater in the living room to go or the radiator heater in the bathroom and we stayed when it was cold and wet. There was however a half size oil heater that we were able to plug in which was in the corner of the living room so maybe the motel may have known that the heater wasn't working. The lock on the bathroom wouldn't lock. We went to have breakfast on our first morning and realised that our milk we had bought with us had a big blob in the container, the fridge had not been turned on. Surely if you have guests booked in for 3 days you would make sure everything was working. The iron was sticking and was getting a bit dirty on the part that goes against the clothing. We had a knock on the door in the early afternoon from the motel cleaner not offering to service our room but she just said do we need anything when I said towels she said you get me the old ones and I will give you new ones. We travel quite a bit in NZ and overseas so know what to expect when you see a 5 star rating, this motel should be a 3 at best. We also thought it was odd that the no vacancy sign was put up but we only saw 3 lots of other guests.

We are completely stunned by your review however we thank you for taking the time to do so.
At no stage during your stay with us did you visit or contact our front desk with any of the issues you have raised.Indeed you had your do not disturb sign on the door for a great deal of the time. When our excellent staff did get a chance to talk with you and enquire for your needs you responded that all was well and only requested towels which were forthcoming.
On check out you advised that you had left a note. This itemised some of the issues you have raised in your review. On inspection we found these issues to be well and truly without substance. For example the toaster was working perfectly.I took it to our kitchen and tested it.The door locks were and are still fully functional. The other issues you have raised are greatly over exaggerated.Any of these issues could have been sorted out by a visit or call to reception.
This unit is a 2 bedroom unit on the ground floor which is displayed on our website and is one of our most used units. It had been booked for 30 of the 34 days prior to your visit.Without fail we have been thanked and complemented by our guests who have all enjoyed their stay with us.This unit continues to be booked with customer satisfaction.
The old saying of "the customer is always right"still stands but on this occasion we believe not to be the case.
A simple visit or call to reception in the first instance would have been greatly appreciated. This did not occur and you have taken the liberty of going straight to the review desk with out first discussing any of the issues raised with us.

Birchwood Manor is a 'Southland/Invercargill accommodation Gem' - so close to the inner city shopping, food store just across the road, petrol station and great hospitality. Sue & David will make your stay with them memorable. They even organise delivery of great meals, you just have to ask. The gardens are lovely.

Room tip: Do not be shy with what you require -

The best aspect of this motel is the hosts - they were exceptionally helpful, friendly and accommodating. The motel is also as 'clean as a whistle' and has lovely gardens. Beds are comfortable and the motel is well appointed. We stayed in room 6 at the rear of the complex which was very quiet.

My daughter (10 years old) very much enjoyed the 'homely' touches in the decor - she felt very comfortable there and wished to stay longer.

We also used discount vouchers, that were graciously provided by the hosts, for a meal at the local Lone Star - an outstanding dinner which was very much enjoyed by our family. Would highly recommend this local restaurant.

The motel is centrally located across from a shopping centre and very close to Queens Park. Queens Park is wonderful for people of all ages (particularly families) and you could spend a whole day there.

Would definitely stay again.

A group of 8 of us stayed here for a night at each end of a trip to Stewart Is. No complaints at all about the rooms (we had 3 studios and a 1 bedroom unit) - all clean, spacious and very comfortable. Good beds, good water pressure in the showers, kitchenettes supplied with all the basics. They were pretty quiet - we weren't disturbed by any noises. Its also very well located - easy to find, only a few blocks walk from the centre of town and a super market right across the road. There is plenty of off street parking and the people who run this motel are very friendly and helpful. They also offer an airport pick up/drop off service, if it fits with their duties at the motel (ie not always possible). Overall, this place was great value!

Room tip: The studio units we were allocated were all on the ground floor and 2 of them were disabled accessible. The 1 bedroom unit was up one flight of stairs.

I can't speak highly enough of this motel. Their standard studio unit was spacious, normally with a king sized bed
but converted to two singles for us, with a wardrobe and drawers. The living area
had a dining area and T.V and lounge area. The separate kitchen was fully equipped as was the
bathroom with bath and shower and plenty of hot water. All very tasteful and clean. Management and staff were very friendly and obliging. Handy to supermarkets and just a short
walk to the city centre, beautiful park and pools.
