Stayed another six nights at Le Meridien Bangkok. Still one of the nicest, coolest designed hotels I've been in. Staff were great-as expected. Management took time to say hello and speak to you for a few minutes here and there-they weren't buried behind a desk full of paper and computer screens in some back office. I genuinely felt they cared.
Taxi drivers seemed a little more familiar with the property as another year has passed and it's not as new and unfamiliar with them. Just tell them the hotel name and mention Patpong. If they ask for more mention Surawong road. It's not complicated. You can also take a card from the hotel with the Thai directions on them.
If you want to do a day trip somewhere the guys at the front door are amazing. Tell them you want to book a taxi/driver for the day and they will go to the street to find someone for you. As with regular taxi calls to take you to MBK or Khaosan, they always take down the number of the taxi which I'm sure deters any funny business on the drivers part. Went to check out the Bridge on the River Kwai-looks just like the pictures, and Erawan Waterfalls in a National Park-really cool and he charged us 2,500 Baht for the day. Made a little side trip and he asked for 500 more-no problem. It was like a 14 hour day but well worth it. You can always negotiate with the driver but you don't to get too cheap and not really make it worth it for them-guy filled up twice during the day and had to pay his rental fee out of what we gave him.
While still a beautiful, clean, well serviced hotel right near the Patpong night market and one street over from Silom which is the equivilent of say Wall Street when it comes to financials, the price had gone up considerably from my visit one year earlier. Fortunately I found a 'book two nights get the third free' deal online. Since I stayed a total of six nights I paid the equivilent of four. That said, the daily rate was posted as over 5,200 Baht/night in May 2011 when in April 2010 I had paid not much over 3,100 baht/night. Quite the difference.
For a hotel in the same part of town, with similar amenities and services in more expensive cities around parts of the world you may pay even twice the price as you do in Bangkok for a room in such a hotel. While not a budget hostel staying traveller I am not exactly the 5 star luxury type other-especially when it comes to price. That is really the only issue I had this time around at Le Meridien. It's still worth it but it may be getting a little too rich for me.
