“Best weekend away after 13 years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I'm flying back to the states - writing this in Japan's United Club and quite biased coming off an incredible weekend at the Four Seasons Resort - Koh Samui in Thailand.

My wife and I had a week of work in Bangkok, had to get away. We were actually looking at Phuket or Krabi, but flights didn't match up. We ended up going to Koh Samui and I think God had a plan for that one.

If you're able - you need to choose this resort over any others. It's pricey, sure - but worth it. I'm now convinced on the experience of what you spend. We had a private pool, everyone knew our name, the food incredible, and didn't have to question a think.
I always think people should get what we got - which was a drive in/out ride to the resort that included breakfast. Anytime I'm in a different country, I like to know my wife is safe - and they insured it...

You just can't beat the service of the Four Seasons, everyone knows your name, knows the package you're on, knows where you need to be, takes care of every need. I think we've been at a Four Seasons a dozen+ times, and I'm now overly loyal due to the experience I had in Koh Samui. It will hurt my wallet maybe, but in the end I know it's worth it. When I left my bags with a bellman/buggy guy - I realized I really trust every employee at this Four Seasons.
Thanks to Melville, Jose, Chai, Joy, and all the other incredible staff involved there.

Room Tip: We had room #607 - and honestly I'd recommend that over all others: More private than any other...

“I mean...I cannot even!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

No, it's just not possible...hands down number one.

I will try to break down this review in the most strategically constructive way, but in general - BEST HOTEL EVER. More importantly, will provide commentary below regarding pricing within the hotel, because I've read reviews that they jack up the prices, and I completely disagree. But first, the very good stuff.

Background: 4 nights, peak season, 4 friends, 2 rooms. Mid-20's. Gay, single, gentlemen (and yes most guests are either honeymoon/couples or families).

#1) Rooms: To die for, and me and my amigos stayed in the cheapest available room. The Infiniti pool is fabulous, the furniture is authentic/looks clean/fresh, the beds are so comfortable, and even though you are in what seems to be a fabulous tropical jungle, you do not feel one little bug on your four season-ified body. I secretly think they hand pick each mosquito and send them away to Phuket at night as to not disturb your precious stay.

#2) Estate Transportation: When you say pick me up, it's as if they already had a vibration monitor in the room that triggered a signal to get you, coupled with an internal mood evaluator that already knows where you'd like to be transported. Dining hall, beach, in town, etc. they already know! That's why this place is heaven - b/c God's angels are watching over you and know what you want/need/feel etc. But in all seriousness, it's a huge estate and if they did not focus on the intra-resort transportation, it would ruin the stay. They do it perfectly.

#3) Pricing: I really disagree with reviews that say this place inflates prices, etc. For a five-star resort, I was very surprised at the rates. They could have gotten away with far worse. Obviously the rooms are pricy (add 20% to your rate after service, taxes) but that's how it is. A) Breakfast - amazing breakfast meal with coffee/juice comes out to $25/person after tax-tip, etc. Not to mention the Baker comes out (with his bread like always to the tune of Beauty and the Beast) with croissants flying at your face for free. And not to mention that there is never a line/wait, that the waitresses remember you from day 1 so if you have special needs (soy milk, iced vs. hot coffee) they remember it and kindly state the obvious (like obviously you need amazing soy milk Mr. Ron - god forbid, we ruin your day with the horror of cow's milk). B) Transportation to and from town: Can I just say - for a resort that is 30 minutes from the Chaweng, they charge 700 BAHTS (~$22 dollars) for an air conditioned, non shady drive (again with towels and balloons of joy)...it cost us that to get back from town with the same stink tiny mobile from a local cab driver. Most places would charge you triple. Then, there was one night where we made a mistake and told the hotel to take us to one place, but turns out the place was out of business. We drove for an hour and the cab was lost - and we told the hotel the next day, and without hesitation they apologized and refunded us, even though it was our mistake to begin with (and they had warned us that we probably have the address wrong). C) Spa - did not use, so cannot say. We did authentic $2 dollar massages outside the hotel D) Drinks at the beach - $13 bucks with tax and tip. Not to mention they brought ice buckets by the 15 minute mark E) Lunches and food midday- again for a resort of this level, they DO NOT JIP U. Nothing is outrageous.

#4) Beach - SO beautiful. Private. Secluded. So many chairs that you can literally hop each and every hour depending on the angle you want from the sun. You can literally play musical chairs, and the employees would even sing for you if needed. Other resorts - you see traffic, etc on the beach. Not this baby! zeh best!

#5) Staff - bottom line, they actually hire folks with a brain. Cream of the crop locals. They get you, they have a good memory, they adjust to your style. I feel like there are meetings daily with who the guests are, who's covering who, etc. It's not normal. They are so friendly it's beyond.

#6) Views - we didn't really have one in our room. But the public views (entrance up top, dining hall, beaches) are SPECTACULAR. BUt as you know - room prices are correlated with views, so if a 24/7 view is a priority, then upgrade your room type.

The biggest problem is the trauma I am having right now as I sit in another 'five-star' restort in the Phuket area where I literally had to purchase an electronic tennis racket to swat bugs away from me. I recommend making this your last stop in Thailand, because you will be depressed to go anywhere else after.

1 real minor suggestion - bathrobes are eh. They are too thai - i need fluffy heaven, and the bathrobes seemed sort of hospital robe-esque.

Small note - the only competition for this hotel is the W, but only stay there if you really want modern/hip vs. classy-gorgeous. W is a W at the end of the day, and even though it's bad a$$, it still reeks of W brand. But, it's closer to town and has a cooler beach vibe (nice 10-seaters smack in the middle of ocean/pools). Then, if you're in you're someone who really wants to be in town center and go out hard (which is gross and mortified us) then stay @ The Library.

Room Tip: Don't choose the room on the beach. Ask for rooms as high up as possible.

“Don't hesitate, it's simply amazing!”

Don't be too concerned by some of the petty comments you read on TripAdvisor, this is quite possibly the best Resort experience I have ever had.

My Wife and I stayed with our toddler for 4 nights in November and we still suffer from having to leave. It truly is such an exceptional experience as Four Seasons are the masters of the "less is more" philosophy. The Rooms are spacious, elegant, thoughtfully appointed and uncluttered which I love, with views to die for.

Service is exceptionally good and we were very impressed at how attuned they were to the family traveler. We were cautious at first because we did not want our little one to have a negative effect on others but the staff were just fabulous with him and he had a blast. We don't usually expect much from Kid's menus because they are loaded with fried food but we were truly impressed at how we could basically order him anything as a kids dish and it was provided without fuss.

Food is superb, we ate every meal in the resort and from what I gather, their new Spanish Executive Chef has made quite an impact with new menus, again, simple dishes executed with a lightness of touch that elevates the food to a very high standard. Breakfast is sublime, its not a huge selection, again its the less is more approach but there is detail in everything and I dare you to try and eat just one almond croissant. Behind there curtain there must be one hell of a pastry team because they are producing world class pastries.

To be expected, its more expensive that eating on the street but I have to laugh when people complain about pricing in such a resort, its akin to buying a Bentley then complaining about the cost of the tyres, its not the place to go and then expect everything to be free.

Be aware that the resort is built on some very steep terrain and unless you like a hike from point to pint, you will be reliant on the buggy service. It did not seem to be too busy when we stayed and reading the reviews prior we would plan ahead and call for a buggy, but after the first few times, we learned that you basically call, collect your things, lock the door and by the time you have walked to the road, the buggy is there. Its effortless but you have just have to factor this in to your stay.

Its worth every last cent they charge and I would go back in a heartbeat.

I am especially happy that our Executive Chef, Alex Gares, exceeded your expectations with every meal including for your toddler. As you highlighted, we are extremely proud of the incredible array of treats produced by the Pastry Team led by David, our pastry chef.

“Comparison of price and what you get”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We stayed in three bedroom villa for two weeks. Everything was fine, except the price for the food and drinks and one minor detail - that there was butler living with us in the main villa building that we were not informed before. Although he was trying to do his best to assist us the privacy was gone and we felt like we are having holiday with one extra person.
Nevertheless service is great and we are sure this is the best hotel on Koh Samui island with a marvelous views and super great territory.

Dear Ruoninis:

Thank you for your comments and for recommending Four Seasons as being the best hotel on Koh Samui. I am pleased that you enjoyed the service of our team.

Our Private Residence Villas include the services of a live-in butler who provides housekeeping services, cooks and attends to any other requests. I apologize that we failed to better react to your privacy concerns so that the butler services would not detract from your experience.

I have also taken note about your concerns for pricing of food and beverage. We have reviewed our pricing relative to other luxury resorts in the region and found that our menus are very competitive. Please email me at brent.martin@fourseasons.com if there are any particular areas that were of a special concern.

Thank you for staying with us in Koh Samui.

Most sincerely,
