When I stepped on the plane to Phnom Penh, I had no idea what to expect. I was all by myself and I really wanted to acclimatize in a nice place before going to Siem Reap where I would be working as a volunteer in an orphanage for 3 months. A friend of mine recommended me the Safran La Suite.
This brand new Franco-Khmer hotel, is situated near to Phnom Penh's monument of independence, and not far away from the river and royal palace. The neighborhood around the hotel is very safe and nice; at 5 minutes walk/tuk tuk you can find lovely little bars and restaurants.
The owner of the restaurant is a charming Khmer lady, who has spent the passed 30 years in France, but who came back to her home country now things are truly changing for the better. She speaks impeccable French and taught her language skills to her Khmer personnel. The personnel is incredibly nice and welcoming, always doing their utter best to help you and advice you to get around town.
Then there is the restaurant of the hotel, which' food is simply amazing. For breakfast you can either have a French breakfast (baguette, croissant, cafe, omelette) or a Khmer Noodle Soup (lovely!), always accompanied by some fresh fruit juice and a colorful fruit platter. The lunch and dinner menu is very varied, offering you both French and Khmer cuisine. Definitely try it out if you get the chance!!
Finally, there is the design of the hotel, which has been done by Fellina Sok Cham, a young Franco-Khmer interior designer from Paris. While the outside of the hotel has something colonial to it, the inside of the hotel is very modern, combining different kinds of natural materials with each other (wood, black stone) all in black, white and wooden colors. The decoration is both Khmer (you can find different buddha's downstairs) and contemporary; perfectly in balance. The rooms are quite sober, but I really liked this. The bed is good, many rooms have a balcony (definitely ask for this) and the bathrooms are spacious. Then outside, there is a very nice terrace with comfortable lounch benches, with a view on the pool; I loved sitting there with a glass of wine just before going for dinner.
All in all my stays (I came back 3 times) at this hotel have been wonderful. I keep a great memory to this place and the people that are working there and I hope to be able to come back there in the near future.
