“My first time....”

My first time staying and the Don Chan, although the group I was with has stayed there before and the hotel did a great job both times. I arrived at night and was amazed at the multi tasking and service of the front desk staff. Although there was only one staff member, he promptly acknowledged everyone as they came up to the reception and quickly assisted each one. His English was very good and I was quickly on my way to my room. My room was on the Mekong River side with a nice view. The room was clean and adequate, however, as noted in an earlier review- the towels were well worn, and after the second day , we only received 2 bath towels, and no longer were given washcloths and hand towels despite asking housekeeping for them. That was the only thing I did not like about the hotel, otherwise the staff and service was excellent, always offering to help. The 3rd floor had a spa offering messages as well as an outdoor health gym and a beautiful - immaculately clean, clear water pool. The multi cultural breakfast buffet was excellent, with offerings that would suit most travelers. Eggs cooked to order, cereal, pastries, breads, fruits, western style pan cakes as well as Indian style "crepes" heavy with egg and sweetened condensed milk on the side to pour on the "crepes" in addition, there were traditional Asian breakfast dishes, rice dishes, soups, meats and condiments to suit all tastes. The foods prepared for a reception and banquet were great! All in all, it was a great stay and I would stay there again, even without the group being there.

“Nice view of Mekong River”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Don Chan Palace is quite a new hotel in Vientiane, situates on Mekong River across from Nongkhai provice of Thailand. You can enjoy good view of Mekong river from your balcony so I recommend the river side room. The hotel offers decent breakfast and there is a good Chinese restaurant where you can have quite good Chinese food (but I prefer Laosian foods when I am in Laos) The discoteque on the ground floor is famous among locals so you can enjoy drinking and meeting friendly locals there too. Good hotel both for business and leisure.

Room Tip: Choose the river view room for Mekong river view and the one on upper floor to avoid the leaking dru...

“Congratulation for the improvement !”

I book this hotel one month ago for my son trip to Vientiane. He is suppose to fly back to Germany , unfortunately some plan change while we have put him in Vientiane before board for another flight. We use to stay in Don Chan before and it was not so comfortable. Poor service and quality back in year 2009. I was surprise by the courtesy and service that makes my day . It was my son birthday and the man with black jacket and speaks good english arrange a small gift and cake for him. We are so thankful for the excellent service upgrade from the previous year. The same man came to pool and offer snacks. Swimming pool is improved and better while i get a free leg massage couple of minutes. The cake and coffee and the Ground area taste good. The hotel will need more landscape look interesting. Is a great memory for my kids. I will be back to visit my kids month of February with family.

Room Tip: room looking at the river is great , have non smoking floor

“Comfortable Rooms ...that's about it!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

The hotel is the tallest building in Vientiane...and has seen better days. Rooms were comfortable and everything was in working order, however, facilites were rather dated. Hotel towels were thin and rather worn, breakfast buffet spread was limited, the pool looked creepy and not maintained (water was murky and green). The Business center was really basic and most times unmanned, therefore we used the facilites for free, restaurant were also average. Waiter/waitresses at the restaurant were also untrained - not offering coffee/tea when we sat down. They were just lingering around, waiting for us to call them. They did not seem to know what to do...
I was wiling for forgive all the shortcomings because the English speaking hotel staff (not locals) were really friendly, helpful and accomodating.
Overall, not a bad place to stay for business as long as your expectations are not that high!

Room Tip: Ask for hgher floors away from the disco side

“Overrated, over priced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

Just stayed here for 2 nights on a business trip, as it was booked for me by my business partner in Laos. At best, the hotel was serviceable but I expected more from the largest hotel in Vientiane. The swimming pool water was green and the gym was not much to speak of. There is also a nightclub in the hotel, so I ran into some drunk people using the lifts and roaming around in the lobby and parking lot when I was heading back to the hotel after a late dinner. Not the most welcoming sight after a long day of work.
