“Okay for Iran”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2008

We stayed here three nights and it was okay. As with almost all hotels in Iran, it is showing its age. The walls were scuffed and the carpet worn. It seemed to be clean, although the sewage smell in the toilet was profound and we had to keep the washroom door closed at all times because of it. The pillows on the bed are terrible - rock hard. I don't know what they were stuffed with, but it was not a comfortable sleep. The front desk was generally helpful, although only one man spoke English. After staying at several other hotels in Iran, I find the breakfast at the Mashhad quite spartan...not a great meal to start the day. The location is okay in that it is across the street from the so-called "Former US Den of Espionage" or the former US Embassy, and it's a really easy (and cheap) subway/metro ride down to Imam Khomenei Square. Walking north about 10 minutes will get you to a good shopping district, and if you are female and need to buy a manteau, you will find very stylish ones here. In all, the hotel was okay, but not really worth the money we paid for it, in my opinion.

“OK, but look elsewhere if you could”

This hotel is OK for a short stay. It's a typical 3 star, but old and a bit worn. When checking in, ask the room on the side that has a view of the mountains. The TV has only one English channel. The bathroom has only shower and all the fixtures and tiles look and feel old. The wallpaper has a number of water stains at some places. There is a tiny bit of "oldness" smell in your rom. You can also feel that (more the style, than the smell) in the lobby and other areas of the hotel. The restaurant upstairs is OK but a bit pricy for what you get. The breakfast is very boring. The location is fairly close to downtown and next door to ex-US embassy. Overall, this hotel is OK for a short stay, but if you could stay somewhere else - do so.
