“Port Moresby Crowne Plaza is in the centre of town, has spacious rooms, nice staff, an OK restaurant, bars and an outdoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

Summary:
Port Moresby Crowne Plaza is close to many office buildings in the centre of town. Staff are welcoming and helpful. There is only 1 restaurant now but a couple of bars. Priority Club status is recognised. There are Club Floors and a Club Lounge that has afternoon drinks and snacks.

Arriving at Port Moresby Crowne Plaza:
A free airport shuttle is offered, running on 30 minute schedules. But you still need to call the hotel in advance if you want an airport pick-up. Check-in was quick and friendly. My Priority Club status (Platinum) was recognised.

Port Moresby Crowne Plaza itself:
A pleasant enough 4-star hotel. The location and facilities were fine if you need to stay in the city. The outdoor pool and deck were nice. Like other hotels in Port Moresby, the hotel is surrounded by significant security. I went out walking during the day without any problems. At night I was advised that the streets can be very dangerous.

Rooms:
My top floor room was spacious with an excellent bed and a great view to Ela Beach. The bathroom was a little dated but ok. My in-room safe was pin-locked with the door open, so I called reception to get it fixed only to discover the phone wasn't working! A quick trip downstairs resulted in maintenance staff fixing both problems quickly.

Meals:
I had drinks in the Pondo Tavern followed by an al-la-carte dinner at the hotel's "The Cafe" restaurant. Both were fine. The hotel's Rapala restaurant was closed and by the looks of things, it could be a permanent closure.

Leaving Port Moresby Crowne Plaza:
A free airport shuttle is offered. You need to book with reception. Check-out was quick and efficient.

“Wow, what a ripoff!”

Hotel is fine, a little run down, large rooms with reasonable bathrooms, average restaurants, good security and a nice free bar with nibbles in the evening upstairs but $A450 per night! You must be kidding! I'm told it is the most profitable hotel in the chain and that it is permanently full. Shows how many alternatives are available in POM but Holiday Inn is better and better value.

“Seriously overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2010

I stayed in this hotel for a week for business.

I was checked-in by a trainee assisted by a supervisor --- no welcomes, no smiles, they just went through the motion of processing my check-in.

You have to have a seriously deep expense account to stay here. Hotel room was 750 kina per night or around AU$290 (!) and excluded breakfast which costs another 55 kina or AU$21. There is no complimentary bottled water in the room so you have to buy at a cost of 6.50 kina. Internet access could be purchased for 100 kina for 160 MB of data, so if you are a heavy Internet user, prepare to spend some amount.

Meals are good although I had belatedly realised that the ala carte items on the menu at the cafe were far better than the buffet. Breakfast was always the same so by the 3rd day, I had already memorised the fare. On my last night, I ate at the Rapala Grill, which, though a bit pricey, offered really good fare.

For AU$290 a night, I would expect a far better room than the one I got. While the room was clean, it was very dated. Also, in order to be able to access the Internet in the room, the network cable was terminated at the back of the bed and that meant having the cable snake its away across the room to the desk where my PC sat. I almost tripped twice on the cable.

The small containers of lotion, soap, and shampoo are very brittle and I ended up breaking at least 7 of them during my entire stay there.

The eve of my departure, I registered for the shuttle bus to take me to the airport at 630 am. However, upon checkout, when I asked about the shuttle, no one seemed to know about the schedule and we ended up leaving at 650 am (which was 630 am anyway PNG time).

If you do decide to check-in at this hotel, ask for a room facing the pool and not the street. As I had a room facing the street, on some nights my sleep was disturbed as there were people congregating (and at times shouting) on the street even at 2 or 3 in the morning.

The concierge is friendly and engages the hotel guests in conversation, checking how their stay is going, what can be improved, etc. I must commend him for this.

Overall, I guess there is little choice of hotels when in PNG hence the high cost of staying here.

“Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2010

I suppose when you have little competition you dont have to try as hard. Now that oil and gas has ramped up there will be an increased demand for safe and branded accomodation and there is not much in Moresby.
Service on check in was poor, they didnt really make you welcoming.
Room was smoking although I requested non smoking. When I found out I was told sorry we cant do anythign about it.
The room was clean even if it did smell of smoke. The bed was comfy and the aircon worked well and was quiet.
Food in the restaurant was good and the service was also good.
Overall the hotel looks tired.
Overall it is safe and secure and the location is good if you need to do business in Moresby.

“Expensive but reasonable standard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

Located near the port of Port Moresby, hotel is in reasonable overall condition. Security is a major concern in POM, so the large steel gate and 4 security guards put one at ease fairly quickly. Service can be a little slow - nothing happens quickly in POM - but was very friendly. Room was OK, bed comfortbale enough, bathroom Ok if a little dated. Ate all meals in the cafe. Breakfasts were standard but OK. Themed buffets are served every night, but the a la carte food was definitely better. Seafood buffet definitely not worth it. Overall and having read so many negative reviews, I was pleasantly surprised.
