I have seen the pictures, read the books and watched the National Geographic channel, yet I was not prepared for the feeling of being there! It was absolutely amazing.
The Camp: small with 10-12 large tents. Each tent has large, comfy beds, ensuite bathroom with watertoilet and savanna-showers (filled with buckets of hot water on request). A large mess tent with dining tables and a large sitting group. Campfire and garden furniture. Powered by solarenergy. Full breakfast, lunches and dinner, all food was delicious and well prepared.
Gamedrives: Our fabulous guides Machack (sorry if misspelled) and Little John were born in the territory and knew every square bit of the area and many of the animals by name. We learned how to tell the age of a lion from the color of the nose, tell the identity by the whiskers and read the spilling from the antilopes ..... During 3,5 days we saw more than we ever hoped for. A new born giraf, still wet with traces of placenta. The Elephant baby excitedly showering in a tiny waterhole, "The Kill" performed by two cheetas hunting together, however they finally lost the game to an equally hungry lion. Lionfamilies with little ones 10 feet from the car, huge lions, hyenas, crocks, hippos, rhino, loads and loads of zebras, antilopes and girafs. The Landcruiser took us everywhere thanks to the skills of Machack who also arranged for lunch and sundowners in the grass with the view of the savanna. It was unbelievable.
Our two guides had a solid knowledge and patiently answered all our questions about nature, culture and maasai life.
Little John, Machack, Philip and the staff of Porini Lion Camp showed us the true meaning of "Karibu". We hope to come back to the Lion Camp in the Wild again.
