We booked for a two-night stay but eventually extended it to four. The hotel is quite popular - we had to book in at another hotel around the corner for our first night since we were too slow!
1001 Malam is set around a small courtyard with trees and a fish pond. This gives the rooms a pleasant outlook and shelters the hotel from much of the noise from the train station and streets nearby.
The staff were really friendly and very accommodating, checking us into our room two hours before the 'official' time.
Our ground floor, twin room was a decent size and fitted in quite a basic manner - just beds, and a small bamboo dresser and towel rack. The clean bathroom was a wet room type set up, with the toilet and shower sharing the same space, as well as a more traditional cold water mandi (a bucket and scoop). Our room had a cool mural across two corners - it is basic, but well-presented. The rooms don't have TV, but the wireless internet is quite reliable and worked in most of our room.
The hotel is just around the corner from the station, Jl. Malioboro and by extension many of Yogya's tourist attractions. Their tour arrangements are probably better skipped in favour of cheaper places down the road.
Beer and soft drinks are also available from the small fridge in the lobby area, which is handy for a drink outside the room. Breakfast was simple, but tasty - the banana pancakes were good.
