“Small courtyard hotel, excellent setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We booked for a two-night stay but eventually extended it to four. The hotel is quite popular - we had to book in at another hotel around the corner for our first night since we were too slow!

1001 Malam is set around a small courtyard with trees and a fish pond. This gives the rooms a pleasant outlook and shelters the hotel from much of the noise from the train station and streets nearby.

The staff were really friendly and very accommodating, checking us into our room two hours before the 'official' time.

Our ground floor, twin room was a decent size and fitted in quite a basic manner - just beds, and a small bamboo dresser and towel rack. The clean bathroom was a wet room type set up, with the toilet and shower sharing the same space, as well as a more traditional cold water mandi (a bucket and scoop). Our room had a cool mural across two corners - it is basic, but well-presented. The rooms don't have TV, but the wireless internet is quite reliable and worked in most of our room.

The hotel is just around the corner from the station, Jl. Malioboro and by extension many of Yogya's tourist attractions. Their tour arrangements are probably better skipped in favour of cheaper places down the road.

Beer and soft drinks are also available from the small fridge in the lobby area, which is handy for a drink outside the room. Breakfast was simple, but tasty - the banana pancakes were good.

“Value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Fantastic place - the staff were very friendly, check-in was swift, and the service was great throughout. The rooms were clean, exceptional, and the ambience was great.

We hired a driver from the hotel to bring us to Borobudur and Prambanan, and the driver was a young female in her 20s, who really showed us the sights of Jogjakarta, and even took pictures for us.

Location-wise, it's a short walk down to Malioboro, which made shopping and eating very convenient.

Breakfast was great as well. Will definitely recommend this to all travellers :) Fresh fruit juice for the complimentary breakfast!

“Lovely place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We stayed 4 nights in this nice hotel in December. Nice, clean room, yammy big pancakes and fresh fruit juice for breakfast, free coffee/tea all day through. Friendly staff, good location.

Room Tip: We stayed upstairs in the corner room and really liked it!

“Irresponsible Management”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

I booked three nights here only to be told that I had to move to another hotel for our third night. The thing is I booked through Agoda and had already paid for the rooms in full. I was furious but since they guaranteed I'd be in a similar quality hotel I agreed to move my third night. Four of us had 2 rooms in 1001 Malam but when they moved us to nearby Gloria hotel, they threw us in one room that wouldn't pass for a decent jail cell. I was furious but they claimed the price were the same ($85 USD per night) which was unbelievable. Luckily, Agoda stepped in and refunded me for the third night. But what is the point of reservations (especially if paid up front) if it's dishonored. The rooms are pretty decent and the breakfast was decent too. Location is great (although hard to find at first) too. But all of that was nullified by the irresponsible management. Don't book any transport or do laundry with them either, significantly more than what dozens of other places charge. The owners really need to get the basics straight.

“Mediocre hotel, average at best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Stayed here during my short December trip to Jogjakarta, my observations as follows.

1 Three of us booked for a family suite but it was not available so were given two separate single rooms. The advertisement said tv in the rooms but are not available.

2 the towels are dirty and smelly.

3 the breakfast is hopeless and they would charge you for an extra egg. In fact one sandwich we ordered was just 1/4 egg :)

4 the location is inside a small gang so incase you have a car then cannot enter.

The good

1 semi spartan and safe place

2 except for the towels it was clean

3 good air condition, hot water and clean toilets.

If the price is reduced or the services are considerably upped then would be a better place.

Try the resto opposite the hotel "mi casa tu casa" decent food but lively company we spent most of the evenings there.
