“Great value... if....”

Hotel Kusuma is a lovely place with friendly staff who are going out of their way to accommodate your needs. The rooms and - especially the bathrooms - are basic but clean and comfortable. There are new and super-quiet air conditioning units in every room and the 1 1/2 square meter bathroom/toilet has a hot shower, a bucket with a ladle but no sink. The rooms are also equipped with a small TV but I found only Indonesian free-to-air channels. Internet is free and the connection decent such that e.g. Skype video calls are possible. Our room was facing an atrium with a impeccably kept garden with bird cages... lovely! Room rates include breakfast (or so did ours), which is served to all guests at the same time, which is 7 am! A knock on the door will wake you up if you are not already awake. Breakfast is actually a real meal and the offerings are fixed and the same for all guests but they change every day. Expect rice chicken, soup etc... typical Indo fare. No continental breakfast available if you are dependent on that.
The location of the hotel is remote such that there are no taxis circulating in the area. However, the hotel offers a relatively efficient taxi call service (5 - 10 min. wait). We also once tried to hire a car with driver through the hotel (on their recommendation). That did not work well and we asked for our money back after waiting 1 1/4 hours in front of the reception. Hence, if you intend to go down that route, you should probably fix the time of pick up in advance and have them call you when the car arrives. We further found out that not all cabbies know the hotel. Carrying its address on you all the time may save you time and trouble.
Overall, this hotel offers a great deal for the amount you pay but if you like to stay within walking distance to the city centre (Malioboro), this place is not for you.

Room Tip: They have 3 suite-like rooms, which can accommodate more than 2. Those seem to be in demand - so boo...

“Excellent management”

The owners of Kusuma really know how to run a great hotel and I agree with all the previous reviews about this little gem. Having breakfast of nasi tumpeng delivered to the room at 6.30am made this place feel like I was staying at a family home. Staff were charming and very helpful. The same management have just opened a new place called Hotel Rumput only 300 meters around the corner in Jl Cempaka Baru. Slightly more expensive but still very affordable, Hotel Rumput have a double, twin and family suites, all which are very spacious and just like at Kusuma, incredibly spotless. The added extras include comfortable and beautifully carved wood furniture, an improved design to the rooms and a pool. In choosing a more contemporary feel to this hotel, management have compromised on some of the quaint traditional Jogja charm that Kusuma has but Rumput is nevertheless one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in in Indonesia. Both hotels are located in a quiet kampung in Condong Catur only 10 minute drive from the universities. Expect to pay approximately Rp40-50K taxi ride to the city centre.

“Comfortable, clean, quiet, excellent service and great value for money”

Kusuma Hotel is situated approx 1km north of the the traditional market - Condong Catur North Ring Road. The big advantage of the location is that you are away from the noise of the city traffic. The location of the Kusuma hotel, combined with friendly service, clean rooms, great food, and wifi made my stay in Yogyakarta very relaxing. Next time I go to Yogyakarta I plan on bringing my family to stay at Kusuma hotel.

“A nice little hotel away from busy city center.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2010

We stayed at the Kusuma hotel for five days and were very satisfied with the room and the service. This hotel is located near the university in the northern part of town, and the center is easily accessible by motorbike (which you can rent for 4USD) and by public transport. The rooms which are located in the inside court of the hotel are quite simple, but very clean. There is a little sitting area just outside the room where the hotel staff will serve you complimentary tea or coffee, in the afternoon, after a long day of visiting such places as Borobudur or Prambanan temples (beautiful temples outside of the city). Breakfast is included in the price of the room and consists of either an indonesian or a western style breakfast, accompanied with tea. The hotel also serves small meals until 9PM at a very good price.
One downside, was the reservation through their website which did not work. We arrived and they did not have our reservation, but as there were some free rooms we were quickly shown to ours.
The staff was very friendly and helpful trying to accomodate any request we might have. Even though the Kusuma Hotel caters mainly an Indonesian clientele, we did not encounter major language barriers.
All in all, this is a nice little peaceful establishment i would highly recommend if you do not want all the hassle of a stay in the noisy town center.
