This certainly isn't the most spectacular Intercontinental property around, and the rooms have a slightly older feel than most of their other hotels I've stayed at - particularly the bathrooms which aren't as spacious and decked out with multiple shower options, double sinks, etc.
This is a VERY nice hotel though. The staff is excellent, breakfast delicious, and the gym has multiple cardio options along with one of the best free weight set-ups I've seen in a hotel.
For me though it's all about the location and price. You're away from the high end shopping on Orchard Road and all the high priced hotels that go with that area. You're also away from all the useless, mediocre Western restaurants there that cater to tourists. Instead the Intercon puts you steps away from Arab street and a short walk from Little India and all the great food options those locals hold. Plus you're essentially attached to the Bugis subway stop and shopping mall, so getting anywhere in Singapore is a breeze.
Unless you're only flying in to shop Orchard Road I can't imagine why you'd stay anywhere else.
