We recently went on a 4 day custom tour of North Korea. We were scheduled to stay at the Yanggkado Hotel, but upon arrival in Pyongyang our two guides (for 4 people) told us we'd been "upgraded"....as the Potonggang hotel is 10 years older than Yanggakado, we weren't sure that was true...but hey, we're in North Korea...it's not like you're going to find a Ritz Carlton anyway. The hotel was about what we expected. Our suites were 3 large rooms. The entryway had a half bath (however, when you went to use it, people outside realized that the frosted glass was still see-through). There was a living area with miniscule size furniture and loud flowered carpet. All seemed very 70's/80's decor at your Grandma's house. To left of living room was an office with a huge desk and cabinte and some seating -- ready for a big meeting! The bedroom was good size and bed was actually comfortable enough. Bathroom was basic.
Like earlier reviewer said - every morning we were escorted to breakfast by our guides who stayed at hotel with us (even though they lived close by) and put at our own table in a huge dining area, that seemed to have about 6-8 total guests every day we were there.
Very basic breakfast - toast & eggs or Korean style.
The hotel is huge, but we saw very few other guests. You could not leave the hotel grounds without your guides. There was a large shop attached to hotel lobby that was kind of half grocery store/half souvenir shop. We did have laundry done at the hotel and wished we'd thought to do it earlier as it was expertly done and dirt cheap!
Of course, there was no internet and TV was only local channels.
All in all it was fine. You're probably not going to North Korea for the hotels anyway.
