Absolutely fabulous!

5-star accommodation. Amenities and facilities are excellent! You can see the famous Gulangyu Island from the hotel room. Superb view!

Short walking distance to the shopping district.

I couldn't ask for more. One of the best hotel there!

“Surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

Book 4 Rooms for 4 nights at this hotel from 26 to 30 December 2011. Relied on trip advisor for this choice. Our group, total of 9 family members were very satisfied with our stay. Though a bit on the high side in price point I think it's all worth it in terms of overall package of the hotel.
We got the sea view room and did not get disappointed. The view from the tub to the sea is fantastic. Late night turndown is also a plus, housekeeping replenish all the stock you consume during the day and there is no need to ask or call.
Breakfast is ok, though not too 5 star. They already had pre cooked eggs instead of the usual omelette station. bacon is tough. But they have a congee and a noodle section for their Chinese guest.
The gym and fitness room is at par or even better with most 5 star hotel in China. Only downside is that they don't have a sauna or a
steam room.
But service is par excellence, they will get out of their way to assist you in whatever your asking, which on my experience is very rare in China. And they even surprise me with a birthday cake which I found on my room after a late night out with my family. That is really excellent service for you!
They have scheduled complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport which we find very useful for a medium group like us.

“High Expectations Unfulfilled.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

The Wyndham is classed as a 5 star hotel. It is located on the water front overlooking the main tourist attraction here which is Gulangyu Island, a short 10 minute ferry ride away. The wharf is about a 7 minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel's public areas are nicely furnished particularly the marble floors. The lobby area on each of the guests floors is large and again lovely marble floors and decoration.

Then there are the rooms which are quite large. I strongly recommend a sea facing room on a high floor. The views over to the various islands are great.

But... Although the rooms are big, the decor does not match the public areas. There is nothing wrong with the furnishings but it is just another bland "Ikea type" design that is prominent in many newish hotels now. Why did they not use a theme to match the area such as water with Chinese touches in a sophisticated way. This could be a hotel room anywhere, just boring and uninteresting.

The bed is too hard for my liking, unfortunately typical in most hotels in China but not what should be in a 5 star hotel, and the pillows awful and uncomfortable. The airconditioning does not seem to adjust even when you change the thermostat temperature. I found the room very warm and with the douve it was hard to get a decent night's sleep.

The bathroom is large with a separate bath and shower. But the shower is very annoying. The shower head moves around in different directions while on so you have to hold it, a stupid unnecessary design.

The breakfast selection is large but mainly catering to the majority Chinese clientele. There is not a large selection for the western palate (and same for the dinner buffet). And their swiss muesli is terrible, should be thick and full of fruit, this was watery and tasteless. There is an omelette bar and lots of pastries. But not a great selection of fresh fruit - where were the bananas?

Very few of the staff speak English and again I understand this as English speaking guests are very few. However those staff that do speak English go out of their way to assist. When they see you are looking lost or want something they are quick to help.

It was not a terrible stay and the location and views make it a worthwhile hotel to select. I have lived in China now 6 years and do not expect hotels here to have Western standards of excellence but the Wyndham could have been so much better.

Room Tip: there is a complimentary hotel shuttle to and from the airport. But runs only about 5 times a day. C...

“Disappointing, very disappointing.”

We live on Xiamen however my wife and I decided we would like a couple of days pampering and booked and paid for a room here for two nights but only stayed for one which says a lot.

Much is said here about the quality of this hotel and looking at the ratings given here in Tripadvisor you would expect the hotel to be outstanding, unfortunately it fails on almost every count in our opinion.

The view from our room was superb out across to Gulang Yu and that was about as much as I can say impressed about the whole Wyndham experience.

The bed was amongst the most uncomfortable we have endured anywhere and there was little sleep to be had, in fact I almost gave up at about 0300 and really felt like just getting up and going home. The bathroom looked cheap was poorly finished and poorly designed, basically like the rest of the room.

The one thing I adore above all else when staying in a good quality International hotel is the breakfast and again Wyndham delivered a massive and resounding failure.

The food presented for the breakfast buffet by the Wyndham was nothing short of dreadful. A pitiful selection of western food, pre-cooked cold and greasy fried eggs and a completely blank look followed by "NO!" when I asked for scrambled eggs....This is not International Hotel class at all. It is bog-standard Chinese local-local hotel service that one might expect out in the sticks........indeed we had much better served to us in a "5-star" hotel out in the middle of the mountains of Fujian not too long ago where I was the only western guest in sight.

We have popped into the Wyndham on numerous occasions for cocktails and we will probably continue to do so but as for staying here again? I don't think so.

Room Tip: If you are determined to stay here anything overlooking Gulang Yu otherwise go to the Le Meridien!

Thank you for giving us your valuable feedback. We are terrible sorry to hear about your dissatisfying stay with us recently.

Please know that we are taking your feedback to heart and will work to increase the variety of western dishes for breakfast. And, we have arranged staff who are conversant in English at the omelette station, in anticipation of the lack of understanding. It is our hope that you will give us another opportunity to serve you well next time.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience during your stay and hope to see you during your next visit.

“No free internet??!”

Really a hotel this size and this expensive should not be charging such high prices for their internet. I've found staying in much cheaper hotels all over China, that free internet is pretty much the standard.
