The Wyndham is classed as a 5 star hotel. It is located on the water front overlooking the main tourist attraction here which is Gulangyu Island, a short 10 minute ferry ride away. The wharf is about a 7 minute walk from the hotel.
The hotel's public areas are nicely furnished particularly the marble floors. The lobby area on each of the guests floors is large and again lovely marble floors and decoration.
Then there are the rooms which are quite large. I strongly recommend a sea facing room on a high floor. The views over to the various islands are great.
But... Although the rooms are big, the decor does not match the public areas. There is nothing wrong with the furnishings but it is just another bland "Ikea type" design that is prominent in many newish hotels now. Why did they not use a theme to match the area such as water with Chinese touches in a sophisticated way. This could be a hotel room anywhere, just boring and uninteresting.
The bed is too hard for my liking, unfortunately typical in most hotels in China but not what should be in a 5 star hotel, and the pillows awful and uncomfortable. The airconditioning does not seem to adjust even when you change the thermostat temperature. I found the room very warm and with the douve it was hard to get a decent night's sleep.
The bathroom is large with a separate bath and shower. But the shower is very annoying. The shower head moves around in different directions while on so you have to hold it, a stupid unnecessary design.
The breakfast selection is large but mainly catering to the majority Chinese clientele. There is not a large selection for the western palate (and same for the dinner buffet). And their swiss muesli is terrible, should be thick and full of fruit, this was watery and tasteless. There is an omelette bar and lots of pastries. But not a great selection of fresh fruit - where were the bananas?
Very few of the staff speak English and again I understand this as English speaking guests are very few. However those staff that do speak English go out of their way to assist. When they see you are looking lost or want something they are quick to help.
It was not a terrible stay and the location and views make it a worthwhile hotel to select. I have lived in China now 6 years and do not expect hotels here to have Western standards of excellence but the Wyndham could have been so much better.
Room Tip: there is a complimentary hotel shuttle to and from the airport. But runs only about 5 times a day. C...
