Our family had a lovely 4-day stay with Remy and his wife here. He speaks English, French and German, and she is Chinese, so they were able to provide an excellent western hotel experience (complete with wine, a home-cooked dinner and conversation) and the local input that a Chinese speaker can give regarding addresses and restaurant names. Though there may be places on Gulangyu with slightly smarter-looking rooms, the family approach that Remy brings to this small and perfectly-located hotel is unique. I have lived in China for 5 years with my family, and traveled here since the early 80s. Gulangyu is one of the loveliest destinations in the country, with old buildings in a riot of architectural styles around every corner, and more old trees in a few square kilometers than most entire Chinese cities. As with a number of Asia's greatest destinations (Laos, for example), Gulangyu isn't about any particular destination or site, but rather just getting lost and enjoying the feel of the island. The key to enjoying the experience here is getting away from the main tourist zone by the Lun Du ferry, and Remy's hotel is perfectly-located for this. Try to get here away from major holidays and weekends, and enjoy Gulangyu at its quiet best. You couldn't ask for a more charming host than Remy and his family!
