“Perfect location on Gulangyu for the western traveler”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Our family had a lovely 4-day stay with Remy and his wife here. He speaks English, French and German, and she is Chinese, so they were able to provide an excellent western hotel experience (complete with wine, a home-cooked dinner and conversation) and the local input that a Chinese speaker can give regarding addresses and restaurant names. Though there may be places on Gulangyu with slightly smarter-looking rooms, the family approach that Remy brings to this small and perfectly-located hotel is unique. I have lived in China for 5 years with my family, and traveled here since the early 80s. Gulangyu is one of the loveliest destinations in the country, with old buildings in a riot of architectural styles around every corner, and more old trees in a few square kilometers than most entire Chinese cities. As with a number of Asia's greatest destinations (Laos, for example), Gulangyu isn't about any particular destination or site, but rather just getting lost and enjoying the feel of the island. The key to enjoying the experience here is getting away from the main tourist zone by the Lun Du ferry, and Remy's hotel is perfectly-located for this. Try to get here away from major holidays and weekends, and enjoy Gulangyu at its quiet best. You couldn't ask for a more charming host than Remy and his family!

“A great place to stay.”

Comfortable, clean room. Warm shower. Electric blanket on the bed -- so warm, comfortable and cozy in January! Wireless internet -- fast enough, completely reliable and included in the price of the room. Remy speaks good English, French and German and enthusiastically provides information and guidance for enjoying the wonderful island. There are two young interns on the staff who speak adequate English, German and, of course, perfect Chinese. They are delightful, friendly young people who really add to the fun, not to mention their ability to translate. We stayed 7 nights, were entirely comfortable and we completely enjoyed ourselves. There is a nice, quiet dining room and Remy is a great cook. He cooked us breakfast each day including European-style ham & tomato salads, fruit salads, fresh fruit juices and wonderful vegetable omelets. Also does a great dinner. Prices were all very reasonable. Whenever we needed something (like a transformer we forgot), it was quickly provided. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: All rooms have their own bathroom, but for some rooms the bathroom (actually a very nice bathroom) i...

“Warm and friendly home away from home.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

Had a great stay at Remy's Garden over a week ago. Its has a real mom & pop shop kind of feel to it, so you won't be disappointed with the service. Those of you who have traveled or lived in China know that the service can be on the mediocre side most of the time. Not here. Remy's a friendly host with some good stories if you get a chance to chat with him for a bit. He gave us a bunch of tips on where to go and how to get across from Xiamen after the last ferry.

Also, if you get tired of Chinese cuisine, he can whip up a good western style breakfast.

Besides all that, the rooms were clean and comfortable.

Gulangyu has a lot of character with its old colonial villas, winding paths, and local cuisine. I can't speak for the other hotels/hostels on the island in regards to their rooms, but we did have a couple of bad dining experiences at the other hotels that offer dishes. One place we went to gave us a salad with frozen tuna. We asked for it to be remade, but were told that nobody else complained about it and that that was the local way of making the dish. Well, not sure how long the natives of the island have been freezing fish for use in their dishes. Needless to say, we won't go back there. That's the point. At Remy's you don't get that "We don't care about how we serve you because you will probably never come back here again" type of service.

I am Australian , my home city is Perth, Western Australia. I visited Xiamen recently and a friend said I that should visit Gulangyu during my stay. I took his advice and spent several days exploring a truly fascinating island. I stayed at a lovely small hotel on the island that provided wonderful very personal hospitality. For my stay Remy's Garden Hotel was the right choice for Gulangyu. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to all visitors to Gulangyu

“Wonderful service, quiet location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

I've just stayed in Remy's Garden Hotel, and had a wonderful stay.

There are other great places to stay on the island as well, but not many of them as quiet and personal as Remy's.

Pros: 1. Great location, 2. quiet, 3. the owners care about their work and their customers (and are both interesting to boot), 4. the 38 yuan Western breakfast looked amazing (I made the mistake of not buying it), 5. The rooms, especially the garden room are great for the isle.

Cons: 1. Perhaps Gulangyu is not the best place to sleep for younger travelers who wish to stay out later in Xiamen. 2. While the European-style, personal, caring-about-your-customers attitude may feel good for foreign travelers (myself included), my Chinese companion found it intrusive to be asked about work, relationships, etc.

Overall, I thought it to be a fantastic stay and they'll certainly get my business in the future.

Room Tip: Go with the Garden
