The Grand Skylight hotel lives up to its reputation as a 4-star hotel. It has large well appointed rooms, nice bathrooms, friendly English speaking staff, non-smoking rooms (real non-smoking, not just treated), free internet (wire), and a good location. The flat-screen TV has CNN, HBO, and a few other English channels. They have the standard broad range of paper-bag bathroom amenities, two shower heads, and marble counter tops. (There is an annoying light under the sink that I could never turn off, so I had to disconnect). The only shortcoming is that they do not seem to have turn-down service, but for me, that is a small thing. My low rate did not include breakfast.
I normally stay next door at the Shanghai hotel, but switched when the rates at the Grand came down a bit…possibly because of construction noise on the adjacent lot. They had trouble finding my reservation, and could only do so when I produced a copy on my computer….they were apologetic about the problem, however; as I have had this happen at several hotels in Shenzhen, make sure you keep your copy of the reservation.
There is another hotel, with exactly the same name, about a half a mile away, so make sure you have the right address. Parking, with validation, is free, but not always available. The metro (underground) is a half a block away, and there are many bus routes servicing the surrounding blocks, so you can easily get anywhere. A taxi from Huang Gang border is 12 RMB ($2). If you get a good rate, this is an excellent choice, and every bit as good as the other Shenzhen 4-stars at twice the price. I recommend this hotel.
