I was sent to Zhuhai by my company to run a project at a production plant in Doumen. My first stint is 2 weeks which I am currently in the middle of. For this trip I am staying at the Holiday Inn Zhuhai. First things first, I am not a fan of the Holiday Inn brand in the United States so I did not know what to expect. To be honest, this is a pretty good hotel. It is a "5-Star" and for the area and price this is as good as it gets. The rooms are clean, although a bit dated. The TV's are circa 1985, but have a surprising number of channels in English. The beds are hard as rock, but I haven't had any issues sleeping. The hotel provides plenty of the little things in your room such as soaps, shampoo, cotton swabs, etc. Since the water here is not drinkable for foreigners, they provide a couple bottles per day to use which is nice.
CAUTION: Do to local energy issues, the town cuts electricity on Sunday's. The hotel says they use backup generators during the shutdown for basic power needs. I haven't been here on a Sunday yet, but I will update once I live it.
The fitness center in the hotel is actually quite good, better than most hotels. It is large and has plenty of equipment. Their our a few restaurants to choose from, a little pricey for the area but not bad. I recommend the breakfast buffet on the 4th level in the morning, good options. I also like that most of the workers have the ability to at least somewhat communicate in English. Some are better than others, but they will do their best to help you.
Within a short walking distance is a duty free mall that has a pizza hut and mcdonalds and plenty of shopping. Be ware, if you don't speak Chinese you will have a tough time. Also you can walk about 1.5 miles to a really nice park along the water. It is also the location of the famous fisher girl statue.
I am going to try a different hotel during my next stint, but only because I won't to see the other options. The Holiday Inn has made it somewhat bearable being here for long periods at a time.
