“A rather poor property on a so-so beach”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

I decided to stay in this hotel as it was one of the best rated on the island. However, I was totally unimpressed with it as well as with the beach across from the property. For a rate of over 100 USD a night one could expect better.

Location: The property is located across from one of the three beaches on the island. I visited all three and that beach was the less nice of them: It is quite rocky but the worst part is the sand you walk on the water. Indeed, it feels mushy, which gave me the feeling of walking on mud, However, most unpleasant part was when I grabbed a handful of that sand and felt the smell, which was akin rotten eggs. Given that there isn’t a sewage treatment system on the island who knows what goes into that sea. The hotel is also located in an area with few restaurants and quite far from the downtown.

Property: The rooms have a fridge and a TV (flat screen) but other than that they were pretty basic. The shower water at lukewarm at best. There is a safety deposit box in the rooms but you need two keys to open it, one that is given to the guest and another one that is in possession of the hotel manager. This can be inconvenient, especially that there is no staff working at night. In that regards, the safety of the hotel consists on closing the entrance door with a rock from the inside. The island is supposed to be pretty safe, but that feel kind of unprofessional. The hotel has apparently dial-up internet access that you can borrow but most laptop computer nowadays don’t even come with phone jacks for that. The ceiling of the room had some slots and some lizards sneaked in and out from them. They are hard to avoid but the noise they made at night was nevertheless annoying.

Service: The staff was courteous. I was, however, unimpressed by the fact that they only took cash.

Had that hotel been the only one on the island I would have most likely left after the first night. However, I decided to move to the Sol Caribe hotel -which I had ironically avoided because it had some negative reviews here- and that made the whole difference in my stay on the island. For pretty much the same money I got a much better room and location, a swimming pool, internet access, professional staff and the best beach.

“Providencia Diving... A dream !!!”

The Island is a real peaceful place, the tourism is still quite and where you will have the opportunity to relax. In Providencia food only arrives one per week in a ship that comes from another island: San Andres. Therefore food there is really precious and there is no way to waste it in huge buffets. Restaurant quality is very good in this hotel. Dont forget to get one of the diving packages with Carolina Osorio... The best diver with all kind of certifications around the island...

“right on the beach, awesome place to stay!”

I traveled to providencia for the scuba diving and fell in love with the Island! After exploring the island, I have decided that South West bay is the best beach to stay on. The Sirius hotel is located right on the beach and has the dive shop a few steps from your front door. I could not have had a better experience here. Everyone who worked at the hotel and dive centre were awesome, friendly people and made my trip unforgettable. The rooms were better than I expected - basic, clean and comfortable. Make sure you travel around the island - take the boat tour, go to Roland's bar (awesome!), and go diving. I will definitely be back to Providencia and the Sirius hotel is a great place to stay.

“Excellent - wonderful location, wonderful people, wonderful service!”

This is a really lovely place to stay. If you are wanting all day cocktails and rowdy music this place is not for you, but then, probably neither is Providencia. This hotel is the sort of place where guests chat away to one another over breakfast (for which you can pretty much choose what you want to eat each day and it's made freshly for you) and ALL of the staff are ALWAYS lovely, such a friendly group of local people who are very proud of their island (as they should be, it's beautiful). This is a local business rather than the Decameron domination. The rooms are cleaned thoroughly every day - not just between guests. The beach in South West Bay is just beautiful and anything that you want to do can be arranged - snorkelling, car-hire, diving, horse-riding, boat trips, hiking.... all of this can be arranged seemingly at the drop of a hat by Paulino. Paulino and Alvaro can't do enough for their guests, really lovely people who know the names of look after their guests, Alvaro will meet you off of the Catarmaran with a taxi already lined up for you. Providence itself is an incredible place and part of me wants to keep it a secret to keep it special. A wonderful hotel and a wonderful island I will return!

“Located right on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2011

We stayed at Hotel Sirius for six nights and just came home to Austria two days ago. If we went back to Providencia we would stay there again for the following reasons:

- it is located right on the nicest beach of Providencia. Freshwater Bay is pretty, but South-West is even prettier.

- the suites are expensive but they are worth the money, as they come with a VERY big bed, AC, minibar, and a balcony facing the sea + they are quiet. We also spent two nights in one of their cabana rooms, which are slightly cheaper, but which are way less comfortable: The room is much smaller, the aircon could only either be turned on (freezingly cold) or off. What is more, the rear window of the rooms face a local school, where the kids started to play the drums at eight o'clock (which you don't hear in the suites "Luna" and the opposite suite)

- the staff is nice. If you don't dive, ask for a snorkeling tour with Roger and Caro. They showed us pretty snorkeling spots at the reef, they went snorkelling themselves with us, they showed us sharks, barracudas, and talked a lot with us. Really nice people. Alvaro ( the hotel manager) speaks little English, but he's nice too.

The only thing that the owner should think over is the fact that they want you to pay a huge deposit (USD 200 for three nights) before coming - which we didn't, because they wanted us to do this through Western Union (be aware, they don't accept credit cards, you have to pay cash) . This would have meant paying a fee of USD 23 . I do see the point in a deposit, but they should accept VISA to prevent guests from paying fees.

If you are interested, here's some more information on Providencia:

- If you are at South-West Beach, go to "Richard's place". Richard is a unique rasta, having his bar right on the beach which closes, when the last guest decides to eventually go to bed. Richard can tell you a lot of interesting stories - we had a great time there. Right next to Richard's place is "Arturo's place": He's funny too, though he seems to open his bar just when he feels like it. :-)

- It's quite hard to get around the island if you don't have a scooter, bike or golf car. We didn't, so we took the Chiva ( this is fun too!) or a mototaxi. But still, next time I'd rent a scooter to make sure I can go wherever/whenever I want to.

- Roland of Roland's Roots Bar is not on the island at the moment, unless he has come back in the last two days. Apparently he has won a TV show (or starred in a movie), so at the time being he's in Bogota, but according to the islands, he's about to come back.

- Cafe Studio serves the best seafood - Check out!

I have been travelling a lot and Providencia is one of the nicest places I have ever been to! :-)
