“Great Place!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2011

We stayed here in early October, 2011 and have nothing but great reviews. After staying 2 nights at one of the 200 Decameroon places on the island and paying prices you would find in Hawaii, we were pretty dissapointed. I guess the Colombian Government got the owner of Decameroon resorts to buy into building capacities of locals to run and operate hotels for tourism. Seems like a good idea until you realize that Decameroon charges anyone who took their courses and displays there colourful sign out front a hefty 60% commission on guest fees. What you end up with are outrageous prices and some very poorly run places. The first hotel we stayed at was actually very nice and well run with good breakfasts but the price was simply unaffordable. Besides us, it was almost completely empty as are all the Decameroon places as noone can afford their prices. In the end, what you have is a situation where Decameroon is actually making money while keeping competition to their big resorts down.

Back to Sirius, it was a great place to stay with clean rooms and hefty breakfasts. The staff were very nice and accomodating and Alvaro helped us plan some exciting day trips that didn´t require the all day boat tours that locals run around the island.

Providencia is an awesome island and worth the trip. Just be prepared for prices much higher than even Cartagena.

“Time for a makeover”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2010

The Sirius is looking its age and feels neglected, albeit an attempt was being made at a superficial sprucing up while I was there. This ionvolved clearing away weeds and some painting, but the fact remains that the tin roofs and ramshackle food area make it decidedly unattractive. The area around the dive shop was also very messy, with oil leaking out onto the ground, whilst the approach (seemingly via the municipal rubbish dump) is ugly too.
The two 'suites' look Ok, but the 'cabañas' with their ragged curtains leave a lot to be desired, although the bed was comfortable enough and the sheets and towels clean.
Staff are friendly and helpful, but the German owner was there during part of my visit and did not have the courtesy to come and introduces himself to me or the other guest who arrived the same day. That's not exactly what I would call 'customer service'!
The beach is pretty, with an excellent place for a fish lunch called Divino Niño. Nothing to do in the evenings, which was fine by me, although the aforesaid Cafe Studio is still open and still said to be good for an evening outing. It is about 15 minutes away on foot. Breakfast at the hotel is the same every day, scrambled eggs, coffee, bread and jam, with the exception of a different juice.
The diving, sadly, is not what it used to be, as global warming is taking its toll and the reef is covered with a green algae that is killing the coral. This is happening all over and I rather suspect that, after more than 20 years, my own diving days will soon be over as a result.

“Wonderful experience!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2010

Alvaro (temporary manager of the Sirius Hotel) was the single most gracious and generous host of any place we have ever stayed in over 10 years of travel. We had a wonderful experience!
My husband and I arrived to Providencia on December 17th after spending some time in Panama City and San Blas. The Sirius Hotel was clean and well maintained with a friendly staff. The rooms have AC, fan, TV and a small refrigerator though everything was a bit dated (although the new renovations in the upper rooms look fantastic). The bed was huge, 2 full size beds together with clean sheets. They also provided beach towels (you need to ask for them) that were clean but had some permanent stains. But the highlight of the hotel was definitely Alvaro Tapia, who was filling in for the permanent manager who was away on vacation. Aside from being a very warm and friendly person, he went out of his way to be helpful. He drove my husband into town to get to the bank when we didn't have a scooter anymore and then lent us his scooter the next day to go to the beach since he wasn't using it. His English is somewhat limited, but he still made flight reservations for an American family that didn't speak Spanish. He also helped arrange for a scooter rental and a snorkeling trip. These are just a few examples.
A note about Providencia. This is not the Caribbean you see in pictures like Anguilla. We did not know this and at first were quite disappointed. The beach right outside the hotel is not perfectly clean and you will find empty beer bottles and trash. Storms pass through in December (we didn't know) which made the water very muddy the day we arrived. The next day we went to Manzanillo Beach. This was a much cleaner and wider beach and had beautiful clear blue Caribbean water. The island is known for it's diving and though we do not dive, we did go snorkeling in open waters which was very fun.
Another important thing to know is that this is not a developed island at all. Providencia has the feel of a small town. People are very friendly and since there are no major resorts, the island has a much more laid back and pleasant feel. The town center is fairly small and I think there is only one place with 3 computers that get internet service. We met people who have been coming to Providencia for over 20 years and say that it hasn't changed at all. I think this is what made it very special.

“Fantastic diving and very spacious rooms with balcony”

Me and my wife really enjoyed our stay in Providencia. The island is just gorgeous. The beaches are empty and the white sand just stunning.

We found the hotel on the internet: www.siriushotel.net
Because the arrival is not that easy, we wrote them an email and the hotel owner helped us with everything. I love their breakfast with the fresh fruit juices and the balcony where my wife and I enjoyed a view of the most beautiful ocean we ve ever seen.

We really want to go back to Providencia soon.

“Very nice little hotel & dive center”

We, a group of 8 divers, had 10 wonderful days at Sirius Hotel. This little hotel is everything you wish for if you're a group of divers intending to spend most of your time in the water. The hotel offers great breakfast. Dinner was prepared for us as a group, every night another typical dish from the island. The rooms are very spacious with air conditioning and mini bar. The beds are also very comfortable and we had a balcony with view on the ocean and sunset.

The diving with Carolina, a very professional and attractive femal instructar, was amazing. The whole group had a great time and we plan on returning within a year.

Greetings to Markus and Paulino, the two hotel managers. They are two very cool and friendly guys. We spend at least an hour chatting daily. They re great.

So, we definitely recommend this hotel to everyone who appreciates a smaller hotel to stay, where the hotel manager knows your name, helps you out with this and that ond once in while even offers you a free cup of coffee.....take care guys...

  • Liked — very kind people that take care of the hotel
  • Disliked — the Colombian standart of hotelery is not very high
