Spent a long time looking for a suitable hotel in Bali - initially I booked the Aston Managed "100 Sunset Boutique Hotel" which looked nice... but after reviewing the maps of the area, decided it didn't look in an ideal location and I wanted to be closer to the beach.
Also, I was keen on booking a place that had a gym as I like to workout. (in the end, I didn't use it... lol... who does on holiday?!) - I ended up working out in the 'garden' in the hotel and took a run down Kuta beach.
The Aston Kuta actually is in a great location I think, despite what a number of other reviewers mention IMHO.
Walking out of the lobby, you head to your right, and walk 5mins to the beach and from there, it's exactly 1KM to the Discovery Mall which offers great shopping and great eating venues (not even mentioning all the nice places along the beach heading there!).
Once you're at the Discovery Mall, you're right at WaterBom park too (which is awesome), and a further 10-15min walk from Central Kuta and all the bars and clubs etc...
A final point on location... the Aston Kuta is more in 'Tuban' than Kuta to be fair, so is pretty quiet with the exception that there's a LOT of construction work going on all around the hotel - so from 9am to about 9/10pm there's lots of banging, drilling and cranes whirring all day - but you can't exactly blame the hotel for that. It didn't bother us too much.
I had a deluxe room... being European, I didn't think to book a non-smoking room as all rooms in western Europe pretty much are non-smoking... as it happened I ended up in a smoking room (as evidenced by an ashtray in the room), but actually for the first time ever I couldn't detect a hint of stale smoke smell in the room at all... so didn't need to change.
The rooms are well furnished, clean, and kept so by the capable housekeeping staff. My only complaint here was that numerous times the complimentary water wasn't replenished and sometimes towels weren't supplied - but a call to reception got me what I needed in minutes every time.
The breakfast buffet was excellent every day... yes it was samey, but enough variety to keep you interested, and the quality some of the best I've had anywhere.
We ate room service a couple of times and again the quality of the food was top notch! Certainly a bit more expensive than eating elsewhere - but not enough to not give it go. All in all, the food is really worth a look in the hotel.
The Pool was most excellent indeed and kept very clean. My only complaint is that there is simply not enough sun beds... on the few occasions we wanted to relax by the pool, there were only sun beds available about 20-30% of the time. And as other reviewers have mentioned, the towel attendant is often not around (but you almost couldn't expect the hotel to staff that position full time all day since there's not enough sun beds to warrant it!)
The Aston Kuta doesn't advertise itself as 'resort' though, so you can't really complain that there's insufficient sun beds.. if you are after a place to lounge around the hotel and pool all day, probably the Aston won't meet your requirements and you should consider a proper resort hotel (but the Aston does make a fair play for nearly being good enough!).
I spent a long time lounging in the Cabinas in the 'garden' which my room overlooked... it's a very peaceful area where hardly anyone visits... well, peaceful save for the sound of the construction going on nearby at least... :-/
The Aston puts on an EXCELLENT Balinese dance show and buffet dinner on Fridays - well worth a look... we really enjoyed it and the performers were brilliant... the only sad thing was we were one of only 2 couples who attended! Sad that not many people were enjoying the show with us... but I guess it was off-peak season.
All in all, I heartily recommend the hotel... it was a nice home away from home for a couple of weeks and I miss it! Hope to visit again someday.
Room Tip: Ask for non-smoking if you're a non-smoker
The in-room WiFi isn't great... not really worth...

Dear RyanOfPoole
Thank you so much for your review and Im happy to hear you enjoyed the hotel. We have all kinds of events planned for our rooftop Bar - BBQs and sunset shows. Please feel free to swing by even if you are only visiting for the day. Yes of all the beaches in Bali, Kuta beach has the most visitors and requires the most up keep. Ubud is great for visitors looking to see the natural beauty of Bali - for your return visit I highly recommend Royal Kamuela Ubud private villas located just a few minutes from Monkey Forest.
Warmest Regards,
