“Great property in a perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

After staying 2 nights in the peaceful area of Jimbaran, we decided to taste the nightlife of Kuta. After much contemplation, we decided to stay at the Discovery hotel for our last 2 honeymoon nights. We had read good reviews of the place and the property was next to the beach which was why we chose to stay here. I have tried to write on all aspects of this hotel as detailed below:

Hotel property & location: My wife and I were very impressed with the property. There is good security and the entrance to the hotel is pretty nice. The lobby, which is above the ground level, was huge and added great value to the hotel’s overall grandeur structure. Anyone entering the main building would feel as if he has come to a 4-5 star resort. The lobby housed a travel desk, a cyber café (chargeable for hotel guests) and good seating arrangements for waiting guest. Going down the staircase beside the grand piano, would lead you to the breakfast place called the pond, the gardens, pool area, other restaurants and then the beach. The garden area is pretty and well manicured. There is a circular pond around the breakfast place with beautiful fishes in them. The pool is huge and in a free form shape. It also houses a big swim up bar. Pool balls are provided for the guest entertainment and one can play water polo and basketball. There are plenty of sun beds around the pool. The property looks gorgeous at night with well placed night lights around the property and floating candles on the pond. The hotel doesn’t have a private beach and there is no beach right outside the hotel but a jogging/walking path along the ocean. The actual beach is just a 2 minute walk along the walking path.
The location of this hotel, which is off the main road, is unbeatable with everything you need like 7-11 stores, spas, shopping mall, eating joints, water amusement park and money exchangers just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. If you want a good massage/spa session, I would recommend you to visit the febris hotel’s spa for the amazing Balinese massage.

Accommodation: We had chosen an ocean facing room which was on the 4th floor and we really liked it as well. We could clearly see the garden, pool and the sea from our balcony. We made the balcony our pre party place. The room had a Balinese touch to it. There was a fully stocked mini bar, a writing table, a 32” lcd with plenty of channels, luggage rack, 2 chairs and a coffee table where you can find 2-3 magazines to read. The room size would have been approximately 35 sq mts. An alarm clock/radio is also provided in the room along with a coffee/tea maker, cups and glasses. 2 complimentary bottles of drinking water is provided daily in the room. An umbrella is also provided during the rainy season. The bathroom is nice 2 but lacks a tub. The free toiletries (quite a bit) provided are of good quality. A hair dryer is also present in the bathroom. The bed is very comfortable and there are night lamps at both sides. We had a problem sleeping the 1st night as a bunch of drunken Aussies created quite a racket from 1 to 2 am but it wasn’t repeated the next night thankfully.

Staff and Service: Our check in was done in 10 mins and the staff at the reception (only this particular lady attending us) didn’t make us feel welcomed (though we were offered a welcome drink) which one would expect from a good hotel in Bali. Though the lady had put up a fake & forceful “kind of a” smile and spoke in an uninterested tone, she did oblige to our request of arranging a room on the top floor instead of the ground floor one being allocated to us initially. We had requested the night staff at the reception area to help us find out directions to the particular restaurant and they willingly helped us with the same and obtained the required info in a short time. The reception also arranged a blue bird taxi for us on our request and provided a wakeup call too. The hotel management was quick to notice that it was my birthday on our 2nd day here, so they got me a yummy cake delivered to our room and it made me feel really nice. The overall room service here is good and fast. The other staff members we interacted with in the hotel premise seemed nice and efficient apart from this one lady at the breakfast place who came up to us and rudely asked our room number during breakfast as if we were trying to eat for free.
Restaurant and food: There are a total of 3 restaurants in the hotel with one serving Italian, the 2nd serving Asian food and the 3rd one is like a 24 hr coffee shop serving local and international dishes which also serves the buffet breakfast every morning. We never had any meals here apart from breakfast. The breakfast buffet served at the pond has a huge spread of western and local dishes. There is a live egg and pancake station too. Even though there is a wide variety of breakfast items, it still felt short of my expectations. I felt that the buffet breakfast I had in Thailand at 3 & 4 stars hotels were better. The setting of their noodle restaurant is great and perfect for a romantic meal beside the sea.

Overall: This is a beautiful property and I would recommend this place to all except for the ones who are looking for a peaceful location with less people/crowd.

“Cleanliness was an issue”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Good hotel but definaltely needs renovating : certainly not 5 star in our eyes. We waited over 10 minutes at front reception for check in, no-one even acknowledged our presence. Arrived at our family room, which was nice and big (family of 5 with 3 teenagers) but the bath had a long hair in it and was generally dirty. It was cleaned stright away but overall the bathroom was in poor condition : mould in the grout etc. My daughter wanted a bath so we lifted the shower suction mat to find that the underside was full of mould and it was covering the fact that most of the enamel was missing from the bath.
For 5 consecuitve days at breakfast we arrived at our table to find at least 2 of the coffee cups were unusable (mainly dirt but on 2 occassions there were hairs in the cups).
We ordered drinks from the pool bar and my son's coke came with a bee (it was under the ice so could not have possibly flown into the glass while they delivered it).
We had a problem with our wifi and was told that if we upgraded ($5 per day) it would work better. Turned out it was a router problem, not the wifi, but at checkout the staff and managers refused to credit the $5 upgrade, although we hadn't used it and it was not the problem at all : the computer technician has said that he would correct the charge at the time.
Due to the bad weather durung our stay our use of the pool and facilities was limited however the pool area was nice and there seemed to be a lot of activities for the kids.
The staff were not as friendly as other hotels we have stayed in, far from it, and the majority of them did not understand english.
Generally it is an alright hotel but you can do far better for the price. Certainly needs and upgrade and is not 5 star.

“A truely wonderful Christmas & New Year.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

My family (of 7)stayed at DKP for 10 days, over Christmas and New Year. It was our first time as a family to go to Bali. The aim of our holiday was to relax, unwind and spend quality time with the kids. We achieved this and more, with our complementary massages. We had 3 rooms on the 3rd floor, 2 were adjoining. The other right beside, which we specifically asked for. The rooms were spacious and clean, quiet and serviced every day. The cleaning staff even made little animals out of the towels for the kids. The hotel was apparently at capacity, but we never felt this was the case. Pool was not over crowded, service was fast, and no waiting for a table at the restaurants.
Breakfast was a huge buffet of everything one would want. We were always greeted with smiles and kindness. Lunch we ordered from the poolbar, we found that 5 meals was enough to feed 7 of us, large portions. Evening meal times were a treat, with different theme every night. Plus entertainment, bands, local dancers, illusionist, fire eaters/dancers. Christmas evening we had a choir from the local orphanage sing Christmas carols.
New Years Eve was 'Spectacular' to say the least. There was a Masquerade Ball in the Karisma Ballroom. What a sight to behold. 'Red Carpet' entrance, pre-dinner Cocktails, fire dance show, band, illusionist, Cabaret (Lady Ga Ga) then DJ. Plus a beautiful gift for each person. The food was amazing, every nationality catered for. Tupai bar then carried on the fun. Was a great spot to have a few more drinks and watch the fireworks.
DKP is in a great spot for shopping both on the street and it is just next door to Kartika Plaza Shopping Centre. The staff are second to none. They all made us feel very welcome and looked after us so well. Especially the bar staff they taught my kids Balinese at every opportunity. There is no doubt we will be back next year. Can not wait.

“Overall a nice hotel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We have been to Bali many times and stayed at Discovery Kartika Plaza 2 times. Overall the hotel is fine and value for money. Breakfast is super and restaurant prices are reasonable compared with other hotels in the same standard on Bali. The staff is smiling and helpful, maybe sometimes a little too fresh in behavior.
Expectation for Discovery shall go on a good 4-star package tour hotel. It is misleading to call the hotel 5-star.
