After staying 2 nights in the peaceful area of Jimbaran, we decided to taste the nightlife of Kuta. After much contemplation, we decided to stay at the Discovery hotel for our last 2 honeymoon nights. We had read good reviews of the place and the property was next to the beach which was why we chose to stay here. I have tried to write on all aspects of this hotel as detailed below:
Hotel property & location: My wife and I were very impressed with the property. There is good security and the entrance to the hotel is pretty nice. The lobby, which is above the ground level, was huge and added great value to the hotel’s overall grandeur structure. Anyone entering the main building would feel as if he has come to a 4-5 star resort. The lobby housed a travel desk, a cyber café (chargeable for hotel guests) and good seating arrangements for waiting guest. Going down the staircase beside the grand piano, would lead you to the breakfast place called the pond, the gardens, pool area, other restaurants and then the beach. The garden area is pretty and well manicured. There is a circular pond around the breakfast place with beautiful fishes in them. The pool is huge and in a free form shape. It also houses a big swim up bar. Pool balls are provided for the guest entertainment and one can play water polo and basketball. There are plenty of sun beds around the pool. The property looks gorgeous at night with well placed night lights around the property and floating candles on the pond. The hotel doesn’t have a private beach and there is no beach right outside the hotel but a jogging/walking path along the ocean. The actual beach is just a 2 minute walk along the walking path.
The location of this hotel, which is off the main road, is unbeatable with everything you need like 7-11 stores, spas, shopping mall, eating joints, water amusement park and money exchangers just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. If you want a good massage/spa session, I would recommend you to visit the febris hotel’s spa for the amazing Balinese massage.
Accommodation: We had chosen an ocean facing room which was on the 4th floor and we really liked it as well. We could clearly see the garden, pool and the sea from our balcony. We made the balcony our pre party place. The room had a Balinese touch to it. There was a fully stocked mini bar, a writing table, a 32” lcd with plenty of channels, luggage rack, 2 chairs and a coffee table where you can find 2-3 magazines to read. The room size would have been approximately 35 sq mts. An alarm clock/radio is also provided in the room along with a coffee/tea maker, cups and glasses. 2 complimentary bottles of drinking water is provided daily in the room. An umbrella is also provided during the rainy season. The bathroom is nice 2 but lacks a tub. The free toiletries (quite a bit) provided are of good quality. A hair dryer is also present in the bathroom. The bed is very comfortable and there are night lamps at both sides. We had a problem sleeping the 1st night as a bunch of drunken Aussies created quite a racket from 1 to 2 am but it wasn’t repeated the next night thankfully.
Staff and Service: Our check in was done in 10 mins and the staff at the reception (only this particular lady attending us) didn’t make us feel welcomed (though we were offered a welcome drink) which one would expect from a good hotel in Bali. Though the lady had put up a fake & forceful “kind of a” smile and spoke in an uninterested tone, she did oblige to our request of arranging a room on the top floor instead of the ground floor one being allocated to us initially. We had requested the night staff at the reception area to help us find out directions to the particular restaurant and they willingly helped us with the same and obtained the required info in a short time. The reception also arranged a blue bird taxi for us on our request and provided a wakeup call too. The hotel management was quick to notice that it was my birthday on our 2nd day here, so they got me a yummy cake delivered to our room and it made me feel really nice. The overall room service here is good and fast. The other staff members we interacted with in the hotel premise seemed nice and efficient apart from this one lady at the breakfast place who came up to us and rudely asked our room number during breakfast as if we were trying to eat for free.
Restaurant and food: There are a total of 3 restaurants in the hotel with one serving Italian, the 2nd serving Asian food and the 3rd one is like a 24 hr coffee shop serving local and international dishes which also serves the buffet breakfast every morning. We never had any meals here apart from breakfast. The breakfast buffet served at the pond has a huge spread of western and local dishes. There is a live egg and pancake station too. Even though there is a wide variety of breakfast items, it still felt short of my expectations. I felt that the buffet breakfast I had in Thailand at 3 & 4 stars hotels were better. The setting of their noodle restaurant is great and perfect for a romantic meal beside the sea.
Overall: This is a beautiful property and I would recommend this place to all except for the ones who are looking for a peaceful location with less people/crowd.
