“Very relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We stayed for 5 nights starting on Christmas Day and we were very satisfied (and relaxed) when we left. It started well when we were upgraded to a beachfront cottage. We selected Tup Kaek specifically so we would be away from the busy areas of Krabi. If you want nightlife and markets don’t come here. However, if you want to sit in a hammock, read, watch the sunset in relative peace and quiet, this is the right place.

The cottage was nice, equivalent to a normal sized hotel room but with a front porch with a bench. The free wifi worked well wherever we tried it (room, beach, restaurant). The staff almost to a person were very helpful. Yes, some staff have only rudimentary English but it is not a 5 star resort and you aren’t paying anything near what the other resorts on the beach charge. It is true that the restaurant appeared disorganised and food took a while to come. But you’re sitting with your toes in the sand, looking out at a peaceful setting, what’s the rush? Our food always was hot when it arrived. Our only complaint is that on most nights we were there they had a “thai banquet” and a western menu and don’t serve the yummy thai dishes that are available at lunch. We like authentic thai food and found the banquet to be very westernised, which might please some people. The seafood grill was also quite nice.

We will definitely consider staying here again.

Room Tip: Go for the beachfront -- nothing like waking up to a view of the water

“Great, quiet location”

If you are looking for a quiet resort outside of Ao Nang and Krabi, Tup Sunset Beach is a great spot. The name says it all, you will see some magnificent sunsets over the islands that are spectacular. Some of the best I have seen in 15 years in Asia.

For the resort, Pros:
- Wireless Internet service is awesome, can get coverage 2-300m outside the resort
- Resort grounds are well maintained combination of grass, trees, and beach. The pool is ok
- Complimentary breakfast is decent with good fruit and several options

Cons:
- Service is spotty. Some excellent staff, such as Noi at the Front Desk and Su the Assistant Manager. However, some staff aren't very service/ solutions oriented
- Rooms are a bit small. Just enough room for a bed and a bathroom, fine for us, but might be small for others who want some area to relax

Overall, a very good experience, and would return for the excellent sunsets and quietness.

“Nice but could be so much better with a bit of effort”

In a great location, enjoying by far the biggest slice of the beach which is shared with three other (much better) hotels. Given the extra space that they have it's a real pity that they don't make full use of it.

Rooms are a little tired. We had the duplex jacuzzi villas which looked by far the best on offer, but even these were just OK. Not sure about the smaller bungalows. The pool is small and the restaurant used for breakfast is rather dated.

The beach restaurant is in a perfect location on the sand, but they make no use of the potential. Service is poor at best. Not helped by the fact that the kitchen is about 70 metres away so the staff spend half their time running back and forth. On the whole the food we had was decent quality, but with such poor service it does take the edge off it somewhat. I like to think that I'm fairly chilled on holiday but even I was seeing my patience tried from time to time.

It really does need some investment and a bit of pride in ownership and management. The size of the site and the terrific location have great potential, but unless you can combine this with a good product and good service, people won't come back.

I'd ask the management of the Tup Kaek to take a long hard look at what they have and what they offer here. They could do so much more if they wanted to, but from our experience there we got the impression that they were just happy plodding along with the mediocre offering and regularly disappointed guests.

Room Tip: The only viable option has to be the duplex jacuzzi villas.

“stunning views, small cabins”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We are seasoned travellers 50++.

During the Christmas time we tried to find a nice place to stay. We travelled by rental car from Phuket and we found Tubkaek Beach area. The Krabi area is very large and it would be easier to narrow it down to posting reviews using the name of the beach or the village. We loved Tubkaek best because it is quiet and with a rental car one can find lively Ao Nang within 15 minutes. In Ao Nang one finds many pubs, clubs, shops and restaurants. Railey beach is a party island (I think we were the oldest visitor here, hi, hi) with shuttle boats service to Ao Nang (10 minutes), well organised.
The views of the Hongs/ Karst formations in the sea are best from Tubkaek beach. The further south one travels, the less spectaculair the views.
Anyway the Sunset is wedged between expensive hotels. We looked at some of these hotels from the beach, and noticed that from many rooms the views are very limited.
Sunset hotel has plain sort of trailer type cottages, with a small balcony with two chairs and a table. We were lucky to score a beach front room. Not really cheap, but the views are amazing and worth it. For us this was the reason to visit this part of Thailand.
The beach is nice and clean. The sea is save for small children. From the lounge chairs in the garden one just keeps admiring the views. So who cares that the room is small.
There is a pool, but we did not look at it, to busy with relaxing.
Somebody wrote that the staff is unfriendly, this I did not notice. We had no problem with the staff. The main thing is that nobody speaks reasonably English, that may at times by somewhat irritating.
The breakfast is very basic, and how to fry an egg is beyond the cooks skills. I ordered a cocktail, which also was below standard. They just do not have experienced staff. Lets face it, if somebody speaks english and knows his job, then he will move to the Ritz Carlton.
Beach front cottages offer full sea/island views, the row behind it has partial views, and the row behind has no views. It all depends on your budget.
In the village proper, one can find The Sheraton, right opposite their entrance is a good Thai/Western food restaurant, The Terrace. Also opposite their entrance is a good looking massage salon, where the ladies are unskilled. However turn left out of the Sheraton, and you will find Porvadee salon (next to a restaurant) in the bend of the street. The salon does look a bit tired, but you will get a real good massage. Open: 10 - 24 o'clock.
We enjoyed our dinners next door to the Sunset resort, in a beautiful restaurant in upmarket Anyavee resort. Happy hour from 18 - 19 o'clock, good cocktails.
We were very happy here and enjoyed millionaires view on a budget. Undoubtedly the adjacent resorts are more comfortable (expensive), but they may lack the uninterupted views.
Next stop Koh Yai Yao Village hotel, previous hotel: Vijitt in Phuket,at Rawai beach.

Room Tip: Front row, most expensive, room 101 is in the corner, with hedge in front: private, but less views...

“Restaurant”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

Do not eat here! Waiting 50 minutes for BBQ Tiger prawns and then they were not done. A lady at a table next to us waited 1 hour for her meal. Totally disorganized and unfriendly staff and the food is sub par.
