We are seasoned travellers 50++.
During the Christmas time we tried to find a nice place to stay. We travelled by rental car from Phuket and we found Tubkaek Beach area. The Krabi area is very large and it would be easier to narrow it down to posting reviews using the name of the beach or the village. We loved Tubkaek best because it is quiet and with a rental car one can find lively Ao Nang within 15 minutes. In Ao Nang one finds many pubs, clubs, shops and restaurants. Railey beach is a party island (I think we were the oldest visitor here, hi, hi) with shuttle boats service to Ao Nang (10 minutes), well organised.
The views of the Hongs/ Karst formations in the sea are best from Tubkaek beach. The further south one travels, the less spectaculair the views.
Anyway the Sunset is wedged between expensive hotels. We looked at some of these hotels from the beach, and noticed that from many rooms the views are very limited.
Sunset hotel has plain sort of trailer type cottages, with a small balcony with two chairs and a table. We were lucky to score a beach front room. Not really cheap, but the views are amazing and worth it. For us this was the reason to visit this part of Thailand.
The beach is nice and clean. The sea is save for small children. From the lounge chairs in the garden one just keeps admiring the views. So who cares that the room is small.
There is a pool, but we did not look at it, to busy with relaxing.
Somebody wrote that the staff is unfriendly, this I did not notice. We had no problem with the staff. The main thing is that nobody speaks reasonably English, that may at times by somewhat irritating.
The breakfast is very basic, and how to fry an egg is beyond the cooks skills. I ordered a cocktail, which also was below standard. They just do not have experienced staff. Lets face it, if somebody speaks english and knows his job, then he will move to the Ritz Carlton.
Beach front cottages offer full sea/island views, the row behind it has partial views, and the row behind has no views. It all depends on your budget.
In the village proper, one can find The Sheraton, right opposite their entrance is a good Thai/Western food restaurant, The Terrace. Also opposite their entrance is a good looking massage salon, where the ladies are unskilled. However turn left out of the Sheraton, and you will find Porvadee salon (next to a restaurant) in the bend of the street. The salon does look a bit tired, but you will get a real good massage. Open: 10 - 24 o'clock.
We enjoyed our dinners next door to the Sunset resort, in a beautiful restaurant in upmarket Anyavee resort. Happy hour from 18 - 19 o'clock, good cocktails.
We were very happy here and enjoyed millionaires view on a budget. Undoubtedly the adjacent resorts are more comfortable (expensive), but they may lack the uninterupted views.
Next stop Koh Yai Yao Village hotel, previous hotel: Vijitt in Phuket,at Rawai beach.
Room Tip: Front row, most expensive, room 101 is in the corner, with hedge in front: private, but less views...
