After the sharpness and efficiency of Singapore, this hotel was a hoot! We negotiated the customs and immigrations malarkey between Singapore and Malaysia with no problems then hopped into a pair of taxis for about a 3 minute trip to the Grand BlueWave Hotel - which you can see from the taxi rank, but not quite walk to due to the crazy road systems. Check-in was long and laborious as we had 2 rooms booked but one was not vacated yet... eventually, after we'd asked can we just check into one now and the other later they decided this was not an option and upgraded us to a suite pretty near the top of the hotel! It was fairly clean and looked OK at first glance, but a closer inspection revealed thin carpets and rather scuffed decor. Nothing too bad, but really not 5star quality.
We decided to go shopping - as you do - and were directed by the very smiley concierge to a particular mall, then he called a special cab to take the 5 of us... a regular cab arrived and we all squeezed in and were driven for about 30 minutes and 50 ringit to a mall which was off the map and not particularly special!
The beds were comfortable and after a bit of toing and froing a temporary bed was brought up for our fifth occupant, then set up back to front (head in the middle of the room), tipped up, tipped over and resettled the right way round! The kids enjoyed the swimming pool and we enjoyed the view over Johor Bahru (though the peeling window stickers were a bit offputting) Free wi-fi was intermittent in the lobby and apparently did not reach to our upper floor!
Buffet breakfast was fine - lots of choice but nothing really delicious.
Then the charming concierge played a trump card - we asked where we could see local crafts and batik - perhaps at the craft centre we found on the map? Oh no, he said - much better to go to this other place he recommended. You sure? we asked; Absolutely! he said. So we clambered into two taxis and headed for the hills. After a few wrong turns our taxis separated, we found the back entrance to the place we'd been told to go to and it turned out to be a restaurant (closed at 11am)! Meanwhile taxi 2 had dropped the other 2 of our party off and left. So we all squeezed back in 1 cab (illegally), drove for 40 minutes trying to find the original craft centre (failed) then ended up 1k out of the main part of town, walking through office buildings and cafes to find our way back to City Mall!!! NEVER take Remie the Concierge's word for anything!
In summary - the rooms were OK but not stunning, the location was OK but not ideal, the staff were helpful but not well-informed and I definitely did not feel we were in a 5star hotel! On the plus side the room rate was good and we came home with some funny travel stories...
Room Tip: Go high - you lose the wi-fi but gain a view!
