I stayed here on a solo writing retreat recently and was really happy with my experience. The compound is charming, with the sound of crickets at dusk, and frogs singing just outside your room, with rice fields beyond - it's like a little slice of Bali, which was actually the intended effect, I learned, after chatting with Kali, the owner of this guesthouse. He is a friendly chap and will try to accommodate your needs e.g. transport to town/jetty if you let him know in advance.
If you're looking for a chilled out place to stay at as an alternative to the backpacker places in Mersing town, or a quiet place to stopover before heading to Tioman, Kali's is a good choice for solo travelers and families alike.
The rooms are reasonably clean, and some have air-conditioning and hot water. Ask before booking to minimize misunderstandings. No cockroaches, just a lot of the small flying insects that like hanging around lights, but keeping your door closed solves this problem and also keeps out mosquitoes.
You do have to go to town/elsewhere for food, so either ask Kali for a reputable cabby or rent a vehicle for your stay. There is ample parking space for travelers with their own vehicle.
If you value atmosphere and you like nature, then you will probably enjoy staying here. Come armed with a camera to catch the sunrise over the rice fields- it's quite a treat.
