The location of the island is wonderful, but unfortunately quite an adventure to get to, whether you're coming from Johor Bahru or Kuala Lumpur. For us our flight into Johor necessitated a hotel stop over due to subsequent ferry timings. From Johor Bahru it is a 90 minute journey by car, so you need to budget for those costs. The jetty at Tanjung Leman has some small shops and a KFC.
The crossing itself was swift and trouble free and the greeting you get from the staff is lovely, with a quartet welcoming you with a song and a fresh juice. They take your bags off you at the mainland jetty and then deliver them to your accommodation at the resort.
Room cleanliness. We were not happy with the initial cleanliness of the room, especially the bathroom. It took 6 attempts for them to get this right. The room still had thick layers of dust in places. The rooms themselves are spacious and well furnished although there is a distinct lack of spare electrical sockets for the inevitable use of an iron/hairdryer or some charger for your electronic device. There was a 3 pin socket in the bathroom though?
The duty manager when we arrived, Margaret, tried very hard to accommodate us, but the resort is starting to look rather tired and is in need of some routine and preventative maintenance. We holidayed with another family with similarly aged children and we all agreed that the resort must have been stunning when it was first built.
Ferry cost we thought were gratis - it was RM280 for 4 return, not expensive but they do monoplise the island. They also tried to add an additional RM50 charge on arrival for Christmas Eve - when I stated this wasn't in the original booking they waived it.
It doesn't really cater for those who may want to partake in alcohol. It is available, but it is at the end of the resort and you inevitably feel quite conscience bringing it back to the privacy of your room or towards the main resort area. The a la carte caters for many tastes, but the buffet menu isn't all bad, but can look a bit samey after a couple of days.
The food ranges from basic to absolutely delightful - you may be fortunate enough to have less of the former and primarily the latter. We ordered a picnic for a day at beach 4 (originality for beach names isn't high on the agenda) and it was really good value with sandwiches, pasta/noodles, condiments, water, fresh juice and fruit in abundance - even the smallest package.
The shop on the island is very basic. I would recommend those going to do some shopping for anything you may want to keep you going. Each room comes with a fridge, so you would be able to keep some products cold.
I got eaten alive by sandflies, but others with us didn't have any problems.
The free activities are good and it is nice to have the wildlife wondering around the grounds. The water activities are also good value. The free wi-fi is very good if you are fortunate enough to be in a strong signal area. That said - the whole signal went down on Christmas day and Boxing day so we ended up calling home on the in room landline.
We stopped for a total of 4 nights and that was probably as much as I would want to. I would definitely recommend it with a couple of minor reservations.
Tip: If you want to have a tipple then bring your own - RM150 for a bottle of wine from 'that shop at the end' seemed a bit much.
Room Tip: We went with our 2 teenage sons and got a pair of (superior) rooms next to each other with a joining...
