I really enjoyed my stay at Tropical Resort.

The owner comes across as very kind and caring - she has some strict rules (no alcohol on the premises, please), but she also provided me with bug repellent, warned me to be careful of the undertow when I went swimming, and recommended the best place to get pizza in town. I liked her enormously.

Although many of the hotels here call themselves "resort", they don't mean it in the American sense, so don't expect onsite spas, restaurants and room service. The resort is a collection of bungalows in nicely landscaped grounds (if you want spas and room service, there are several expensive resorts on the island).

The bungalows are comfortable and kept very clean. They all have nice covered porches where you can sit and look out over lovely gardens, and the location is perfect if you want a quiet relaxing break. Pantai Tengah is quiet and relaxed, but only about 15 minutes walk to the main strip at Pantai Cenang, which is filled with shopping, restaurants, budget hotels, bars, and a crowded beach. In comparison, the beach at Tengah is much nicer - a quiet place to chill without having to dodge hordes of other tourists.

Langkawi is a very touristy resort island, so everything here is much more expensive that elsewhere in Malaysia. That said, I thought Tropical Resort was excellent value for money. I paid 90RM a night (although the price went up at the start of January to 100RM, but I'd arrived on 29 December so I got the cheaper price).

If you like gardens at all, I recommend the Rice Garden - it's fascinating, and the man who showed me around was amazing, telling me stories, teaching me about all the plants, giving me coconut biscuits to eat and teaching me to play a traditional local game. Visit it if you get the chance!

Good value bungalow (relative to what's around) and very close to the beach. Not a party place but close enough to those places if you want to have a drink. Rooms are basic but fine. Leila was very friendly and helpful and was really what sold me on this place after walking up and down the beach looking at places. She was upfront about what type of place it was and her genuine and open demeanor was a big plus.

We usually stay in guesthouses, hostels or similar but after we done some research we figured on this island we would be better of with the choice of this budget hotel.

We stayed 3 nights. The Resort has seen better days. I reckon they haven't done any renovation since they opened around 15 years ago. But it was well maintained and very clean. And that's in the end what counts, right?

They own this great piece of land. Close to the beach but you have to walk through all this grass and staff to actually get to the beach. I wonder if they also own this land or someone else. It's a pity that they don't do anything with it if they own it. Not that they have to build anything but make a proper path and maybe have a nice little beachside chill area. But there is only going to be you on your towel. ;D

We stayed here for for nights in February 2011. We liked it, and it's very close to Pantai Tengah, wich we thought was a much nicer beach than Pantai Tengah. You only walk for about 100 meters across a field to get to the beach.
The resort isn't really a resort - there's no pool, spa or restaurant. Just bungalows - wich we like. You get breakfast, but you have to walk quite far to another hotel to eat it.

The bungalow was very nice. Not very big, but clean and with a clean and nice bathroom. Air condition, and it was much cheaper than other resorts at about the same standard. The gardens around the bungalows are very lush and beautiful, and the German woman who owns the place with her malaysian husband is very nice and helpful. They are both muslims, so they didn't allow alcohol on the premises. Not a big problem, but I did miss having a beer or two on the balcony. But she seemed like she could be strict, so we didn't dare to bend the rules.

It's a very quiet resort, and it seemed like most of the other guests went to bed at 10 in the evening. So we almost felt like criminals the one time we came home drunk at 5 in the morning. It really is a great and genuin place to stay - but we seemed like the only young "party people" there.

Pantai Tengah is a nice and quiet area. Very little night life, but there are som great restaurants in the neighboorhood, for excample an Indian and an Italian restaurant almost just across the street. It's also kind of a short walk to Pantai Cenang, so in our opinion this might be one of the best located resorts in the Tengah/Cenang area.

If you're a backpacker who want to meet new people or you want to party and shop for souvenirs every night, you should stay in Cenang. But if you prefer a bit more peace and quiet, less sales people and taxi drivers shouting at you - and still want to be close to where the action is - you should definitely stay in the Tengah area.

And the Tengah beach is much nicer! It's much less people, the scenery is better, with palm trees hanging over the beach and calm waters, much calmer than the water at Pantai Cenang. It never gets crowded, and there was no difference in the water when the tide was out. At Pantai Cenang the water withdrew so you had to go really far out to swim. And at Pantai Tengah you avoid all the jet skis, paragliders and general fuzz and noise. We loved Langkawi, and Tengah is by far the best beach in this area.
