Stayed for two nights at the lovely Hotel Penaga. There's lots of new boutique hotels here in Georgetown that I want to try but since I planned this trip super last minute (only usd 200 round trip from HK, sunny and 33 celsius vs HK's current 11 celsius) the convenience of booking online with instant confirmation made me choose this hotel (Muntri Mews is in a better location & can also book online but was full).
The hotel was very prompt to respond to my various requests from spa treatments to airport transfers. You know Penang is a foodies destination when at 1 am in the morning the driver that picked me asked if I wanted to eat (many 24 hr food stalls apparently) and when I said no, spent the next 20 min explaining the different types of durian and laksa in Penang.
I picked the cheapest of the rooms, a hutton room on the third floor (H31) ceilings were high (maybe coz it was the top floor plus attic?) room was clean, spacious, free fast wifi, the aircon and fan kept the room cool but somehow the air never quite made it into the bathroom....& sigh I could hear the traffic (the motorbikes mostly), slightly annoying but I got used to them.
The hotel is decked out with original paintings by local artists, and like Georgetown itself, a photographer's dream. The breakfast was ok, decent choices but the fruits were not covered up so flies could get to them. No service at all ie I had to pour my own tea (the only thing brought to my table were my eggs which I ordered at the kitchen counter). My second morning here I went for Roti Canai instead on 56 transfer road (1 min from hotel) followed by mango, papaya, guava etc from the wet market at Jalan kuala kangsar (two blocks away). Result: total breakfast bill under MYR 10 and soooo delicious.
The hour and half massage at the Spa was very good and only regret was not booking it two days in a row.
I loved Georgetown, you could easily spend hours exploring this town with plenty of surprises around each corner, other things I liked, the Hotel Penaga is eco friendly & a short walk to Penang's famous (street) food scene (ie Joo Hooi's excellent Laksa on 475 Jln Penang) & attractions. The staff at the hotel were quite nice, Mariana the spa manager told me to be careful walking around town by myself ( Georgetown felt safe, if anything I was worried re: the ditches and getting hit by the traffic as cars/bikes definitely do not stop for us) Also the hotel responds to tripadvisor reviewers' suggestions, ie a previous reviewer asked for blinds over stained glass windows which I see are now installed.
In sum, a great hotel to base yourself in for discovering Georgetown.
