I stayed there a couple of times, helpful staff, some multilinguist, nice b'fast, and the vixinity is so convenient, those 7-11 kinda stores around, many street hawkers w/ delish dishes, close to transport centres (local & interstate), and just 8 mnt drive to the famous gurney drive

I like the hotel but really, a renovation and cleanliness upgtade are necessary

“Nice hotel in good location but could enjoy renovation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

This is a nice hotel with large rooms offering nice view at the city. It's clean, comfortable and in a very good location - it's 5 min by feet to Komtar bus hub and only 1 km from the historic buildings of Georgetown.

They have a concierge who is very friendly and knowledgeable about the city. He told us what's worth visiting besides the UNESCO heritage centre and what city buses we should take to get there. Also provided us with maps and other stuff.

The pool outdoor on the 4th floor. It's small but nice and there are not many people wanting to use it so it's usually big enough. It's nice for a quick relaxation just before sunset after a busy day sightseeing.

The breakfast buffet is great quality and variety.

The only downside is that rooms could get some renovation. They are clean and comfortable but simply are quite old. If that doesn't scare you, the hotel offers good value for money.

There are food stalls at the corner just 100 meters from the hotel which starts running in evenings. If you're not afraid of such food - go there and eat like a local. You will eat dinner for $1-2 and it usually will be very tasty!

“Dirty, rundown and unproffessional”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

When arriving the receptionist first couldn't find our booking at all and then told us the room was not ready. We'd have to wait for another hour or so..

Second try we were told we could not fit in baby cots and extra bed. The conversation we'd had during our reservation had told us noting about this.. When we finally arrived to our room we could not understand why this should be impossible. This room was not smaller than any other rooms we stayed at during our 9 week travel through Asia. But we were once again told that we could not have baby cots at all! The room had an amazing view of Georgetown and the sea behind. This was the best part of our entire stay!

Enterring the room we couldn't understand why we had to wait for it since it didn't seem to have been cleaned at all. The bathroom was really dirty (!), full of black hair everywhere and the bathtub was stained, hairy and still full of soaprests and dirt! We did complain twice but nothing happened.. After some hours we cleaned the room ourselves and took a shower instead..

We had carefully coosed the hotel because it had a pool - and we have three children. Now here comes the dissapointments showering over us - the pool was closed due to maintenance.. No further notice on that either on our booking or when corresponding to the hotel during booking. The maintenance was to be finished after one day, but, surprise, the second day there was another note in the lifts stating that the pool still was not finished. We also had a room with internetconnection that didn't work properly either.. It worked sometimes but got disrupted over and over again.. By this time we were really annoyed and angry.

We tried to complain but since no one at the front desk even understood basic English this was hard. How can you market yourself as a business and touris friendly hotel and no receptionstaff speak English? This felt so unprofessional and like a "wannabe" business hotel.. In the end we were shown to some kind of supervisor or manager who appologized for the inconveniences.. But still we didn't get to use the pool, the internet was not working and our bathroom was disgusting and no one seemed to bother at all..

We were on the road for nine weeks, stayed at many hotels, large, small and bungalows in both Malaysia and Thailand. This was our deepest disappoinment. It was rather expensive and such a low standard in both staff, service and overall impression! Really not worth the money!

“Not recommended..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

We were actually looking forward to stay at this hotel, because since it's under the Sunway group, we expected it to have similar standards as the one in KL.

But when we arrived at the hotel, we were very dissapointed. Below are the reasons why:

1. No bell boy came to take our bags when we arrived. After a few minutes then only he came to take our bags from the car. After I finished check-in at the receptionist, we couldn't find the bell boy. He was missing again. In the end, we pushed the trolley ourselves to our rooms! hahah.. the bell boy then came up to take the trolley. I guess he finally noticed that the trolley was missing ;)

2. The rooms and hallways have a certain smell, like old hotel kind of smell.

3. No iron/ironing board in the room. You need to go to the ironing room (I can't remember which floor) but it was at the end, quite scary if u're alone.

4. We ate some cookies in the room, and expected the housekeeping to clean/vacuum the carpet the next day, but when we came back, the bit & pieces of cookies were still on the carpet! and the housekeeping should have seen it because it was in the middle of the room :(

5. During the 2nights we stayed there, we could hardly sleep because the noise from karaoke/live band somewhere downstairs was sooo loud until about 2-3am.

6. When we wanted to check out, we called for the bell boy to take our bags from our rooms. We had to wait about 15-20mins. When we went down, the bell boy just left our bags at the entrance, and he vanished! He was no were to be found, thus we had to carry the bags ourselves to the car.

7. There are no Halal restaurants around the hotel area. You need to walk further or drive to get Halal Penang food. There are some Chinese hawker stalls in front of the hotel.

I'm definitely not impressed with this hotel and I don't intend to stay here again unless they improve their service and facilities.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floors so that you won't hear the karaoke/live band noise at night.

“Convenient location but place needs some renovating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Upon checkin at the hotel, the processing time it took came as a bit of a disappointment. Prior booking was already made online and full amount for period of stay was already paid.
Our arrival was at 2pm but we found out that the room was not ready yet and had to wait about half an hour to 45mins before we finally got our room.

The room contains basic facilities, but there was no in room safe. The room did look a little rundown but overall everything was still functioning well. The good thing about Sunway Hotel is its strategic location in town. There are many eateries around the Hotel area. And its near to the Komtar Bus station so getting around town is made easier. However, i had made use of Google Maps to mark the hotel's location and it was somewhat off from what is reported. We ended up asking the locals for directions and walking quite a long way back in the evening. If you're using Google Maps, do confirm that Google has corrected the location, or take note of the correct location before you leave the Hotel
