“Fantastic Place”

Shangrila Rasa Ria is a fantastic place to stay. Very relaxed and the food was great! The outdoor restaurant (hawkers?) was superb and breakfast by the beach in that glass restaurant was very memorable. Looking forward to another family vacation.

Room Tip: Ocean Wing is a plus.

“Corner Ocean Wing Room, Fab-u-lous!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 February 2012

We spent 2 nights here as a treat after some rainforest explorations. The place was spotless and the room was lovely. Fully equipped with everything we needed. Good tv, comfy bed and superb view of the sunsets which were awesome. We ate in the Indian restaurant Naan, my food was good, my partner was disappointed. We also tried the Japanese restaurant. Never again! Jellyfish salad! I suppose we should have known but the main food all tasted the same and it was the most expensive meal we had. We enjoyed the experience never the less, and the chef was very entertaining. We visited the orangs, beautiful but take lots of bug repelllent as the Mosquitos were rife in the reserve. Also beware sand flies by the pool, I managed 5 troublesome bites while sunbathing as we were on the grass. Sun beds by the pool were apparently less of an issue with the sandflies. Breakfast was quite good although the venue was a bit crowded and lots of children who kept open and closing the doors and being generally irritating!
The staff were all charming and courteous and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. As previous reviewers mention, the building work on the Garden Wing is more extensive than we had expected and this impacted a little as our pool was busier. I'm sure it will be lovely but don't expect it to be finished any time soon!
As we only had a short stay we didn't go into town but that would have been one long ride so we felt we missed out a bit even tho we knew it was 45 mins away when we booked. I have stayed at the Tanjung Aru years ago but was put off by reviewers saying it needs refurbishing. Better location tho and the island boat trips are a pleasant way to do something a bit different.

Room Tip: Ocean wing corner room with tub on the balcony made this stay extra special!

Thanks for yoru review and good to hear you enjoyed the Ocean Wing rooms. I was concerned to learn you did not enjoy some of your meals - we have taken the jellyfish salad off the menu in Kozan as I understand it is an acquired taste for the Western palate. The renovations will be finishing off within the next 6 weeks or so and although we do our best to contain the noise there are times when it is more obtrusive than othrs. Thanks for staying with us, regards Timothy Wright

“Absolutely loved it!”

We stayed at Rasa Ria in an Ocean Wing Room. Fantastic. We didn't get much use of the adult pool given the children were with us but just lovely. The location is remote but we did 2 nights in Kota at Le Meridien prior to heading up the coast so we didn't feel we missed out on anything.
The buffet / hawker restaurant is magnificent (a large part of why we chose this place). We ended up eating there most nights although the other restaurants were good too.
Our boys loved the activities available through the onsite Nature Reserve. They did the Orangutan Ranger program and night walk to see giant tarantulas.
We were lucky, renovations were discreet and didn't bother us. Staff delightful, would love to visit again one day.

“Very good!”

Stayed for 2 nights here w/ocean view.

Compared to Tanjung Aru, this was a heaven. If you want to stay here and just chill out this is the place. The beach was clean and beautiful. Some recommendations

1) Orang-utan sanctuary was a big dissapointment so personally I wouldn't recommend - I would rather see them in the zoo

2) The resort is a bit out of place so if you are a city-type, this might not be for you

3) The foods selections were very limited - The Coast's breakfast was a bit of dissappointment at this level of hotel

Thank you for your comments & sorry to learn you found Coast breakfast a disappointment - it may not have the huge variety of a large breakfast buffet but Coast does have a great view, sparkling wine to start the day and a choice of hot dishes served to our guests. Our Nature Reserve is definitely not a zoo and if that is what you prefer, I can understand your disappointment. Thanks for staying with us, regards Timothy Wright

“Amazing Faultless Hotel”

Stay here for three nights as part of our Honeymoon. It could not have been better.
The staff were incredibly friendly, check in took place in out room which had a bath on the balcony overlooking the pools and beyond to the sea. 15mins after check in we were meeting baby Orangutans in the onsite sanctuary.
Couples pool was ultra clean and quiet. All the food was amazing especially the breakfast buffet which was out of this world.

I can't recommend this hotel enough.

Room Tip: Deluxe overlooking pool
