After four weeks of travelling we decided to treat ourselves to a couple of more luxurious relaxing days and chose Gayana. After booking I was a little concerned about the reports of rubbish floating in the water and the illegal immigrant village on the other side of the island, but need not have worried. We didn't see any evidence of this and had a very enjoyable stay.
It is possible to find special offers on various different websites, so it is worth checking these when booking.
It is definitely best to have a villa with steps for direct access to the sea. Not only for the ability to swim/snorkel in the clear waters straight from your own deck, but also because you can order breakfast to be delivered by boat to your villa. The villa was spacious, simple decoration and welcoming. The wireless signal was a little weak in the room but fine in the main buildings or around the pool.
For dining we liked the Macac restaurant (well named because the monkeys do come down until shooed away by the staff) but disliked the atmosphere in the Alu-Alu Chinese seafood restaurant where there were tanks of fish for you to choose which to eat. Prices were of course much higher than on the mainland.
For activities the snorkelling was great and the marine research lab interesting to visit. Other than that it is mainly relaxing or spa treatments. So I'd recommend staying a few days rather than a whole week.
Service was sometimes a little on the slow side but the staff were friendly and helpful. On the last day we had to leave earlier than the scheduled ferry transfer to catch our flight and were able to take the staff boat at 9:30am.
