Permai was all-in-all a very enjoyable experience. We stayed in one of their treehouses, which is basically a small cottage built high up on stilts at the canopy level of the jungle. It required you to walk up two flights of stairs to get to the house - although it was ok for us, it can get a litle dangerous when raining in the dark, and might send chills for those afraid of heights.
The house itself was very nice - clean and cozy, with tree branches all around the house and the balcony, ceiling to floor windows on three sides, and the sound of the ocean which is just 75 meters away. It's a great feeling waking up in this environment for city dwellers, perfectd by open windows with screens, and a ceiling fan to circulate the breeze.
The resort itself didn't have too many guests, so we enjoyed the privacy. It has two beaches and a pool from cool jungle water that waterfalls to the beach. The second beach in the back to the South China Sea was post card perfect, and we had it all to ourselves for an hour. Fantastic.
Relative to other places, Permai treehouses aren't cheap - it was 2.5x what we paid the night before at the sheraton four points, but you're paying for a unique experience and the privacy. Can't say if the latter will exist during peak season, but I would gladly pay again if I come back to Kuching.
Only reason I did not give five stars is because I felt the treehouses could have been a little cleaner. There was a dead bug and something that looked like a piece of mud (I hope) on my bed that may have fallen from the ceiling - might help to clean up.
Also, we tried to arrange an excursion to do the mongrove tour in kuching wetlands park, but the hotel told me that they couldn't do the tour because it rained (sea would be too stormy) and they also said there was zero chance the animals would come out. We then booked through a tour guide from Bako, who arranged a boat from another location - the water was fine, and we saw the river dolphins, the probiscus monkeys (from a distance), and supposedly crocodile eyes. All in all the hotel was wrong to tell me that the tour was not possible, but the tour was a big waste of money at R130 per person.
I would suggest a climb to Mt. Santubong next to the resort for the adventurous - we did not do it because of time, but looks like it would be awesome - on my agenda for next time.
