“Trendy Hotel, Great Services, Good Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

Modern and trendy is probably what most would use to describe this 13-room hotel just north of downtown Kyoto. 13 Rooms, 13 designers - that's their theme.

We took 3 of the rooms for our 5-day stay in Kyoto. The location was great for what we wanted - family holiday with a small kid, lots of quiet, cute streets to walk around in, new trendy cafes popping up. The hotel is about 10-15 mins bus ride to Kyoto Tower, all other temples are also just a bus ride away.

The rooms are very comfortable and convenient, the larger rooms are really, very big!! I stayed in one of the smallest room which was still larger than many hotel rooms I have stayed in. Not all the rooms have free wi-fi, though it is available on the ground floor - or there are computer terminals on the 1st floor (24-hr). The rooftop bar/terrace is also a great place to hangout, a shame that it's only open from 5-11pm.

I must say that I got a great discount and therefore found this to be pretty good value for money (considering the rates in Kyoto), though this may not be reflective of their real rate.

Room Tip: All the rooms are different......... so good luck!!

“Really a nice hotel to stay in Kyoto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

We had a semi-suite in this hotel and it was really great. The hotel shows a lot of good taste - Bedroom, living room and bathroom with jacuzzi was just offering everything we needed. The huge TV and Iphone stands just show how modernly equipped the hotel was. It is only a bit remote from the center. Best connection is with bus - or 10 mins walk from the closest Tube station.

“Not Average, but not great either”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

This hotel is interesting in that each room is designed by a different designer. So, this review, to be fair is only for our one room, which I did not particularly like. We were spoiled by another hotel in the area too, so there was a striking difference with this hotel and expectations were set due to similar price and prestige. The staff here was not stellar - not great with English (yes, I know it is Japan, but these kinds of hotels should have some English support), and I did not like having to lug my bags down 15 steps to get to an elevator. The room we had (White Room) was modern but already looking like a former trend, plastic-y and the bathroom had little ventilation so it was too moist in there. The bathroom floor was wet after showers due to their way of channeling water. There was NO wireless in the room - only the lobby area. Beds were ok. Pajamas and robes supplied were excellent. The iPod dock was dated and would not accept our newer iPhone/iPod Touch. Fortunately I had a cable and could just hook up in its place. Bicycles were available for 1200 yen per day but at other hotel they were free AND really cool power assisted versions. Location is excellent for The Screen - in the heart of a great neighborhood. Perhaps that's why it can command the same price. But I was not feeling compelled to return... It is certainly a nice hotel, just not exceptional. One other nit-pick. Hotel uses card keys like any modern hotel. Just in this case, the room number is printed on the back! Not so secure.. but then again, in Japan, no worries.

Room Tip: Look at web site since all rooms are different!

“Great hotel with modern vibe and great atmostphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

We stayed at The Screen for one night in Kyoto and wished we had stayed longer. Its in a great location, feels like a new hotel, and has wonderful service.

From the moment that you check in the staff is there to help and take care of every detail. They bring you in to the lounge right away for a cocktail, which is always nice.

The rooms are all different, we had room 101, it is the one that looks like it has colorful floral shogi screens. The bedroom can be closed off from the living room which is nice. Room is small, at least for Western standards and there was no TV in the bedroom, and its not possible to view the one in the livingroom from bed.

They provide a great inroom espresso maker which is nice, there is no wifi in the room but they have LAN access. This is a little strange since they have wifi in the lobby?

The strangest part of the stay is the bathroom. We stayed at several placed in Japan, and none had this set-up so I know its not a Japan thing.
The bathroom was very small with a gigantic jaccuzzi style tub. Then off to the side of that tub was the smallest shower I have ever seen, and it was just open to the entire room? It has a plastic curtain that you could pull but it was tiny and water gets everywhere in the entire bathroom, on the sink, walls, floor etc. Because of this the door to the room always stays closed, so you can't prop it open. Its a bit messy in there after a shower and then you are walking in the wet floor when you leave the bathroom, which leads straight to the living room. Not the best design at all.
Other than the crazy bathroom, it was wonderful.
The Lounge is very nice, the food is wonderful, we had the breakfast with out room and it was great!

Room Tip: As if they have rooms with normal showers...

“ultra thoughtful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2011

fantastic place- stylish, unique, central location. staff went out of their way to be helpful. I have stayed in many fantastic hotels but this was the 1st time a hotel provided taxi chits for a restaurant a bit further away- what a lovely surprise.
the room was spacious [rare in Japan] with a sitting area, a nespresso machine and computers right outside the door! the restaurant was very attentive to food preferences and remembered day to day. I was travelling with my teen aged niece who thought very highly of it as well.
a true highlight of my trip to Japan.
