“Cheap and cheerful for unfussy travellers who won't spend much time in the room”
The hotel isn't easy to find at first - although there's a map, keep your eyes peeled for the sign or you'll miss it. We walked through the arcade that the entrance is located in (very close to one of the arcade entrances), got lost much further on and only realised it was right back where we started in the first place and we'd just missed the subtle sign!
Once you've found it though, this is what you'll find:
- Clean and comfortable beds (not especially but adequately big!)
- Polite, friendly and helpful staff
- Vending machines in the lobby if need be
- Small rooms, but adequate for budget travelers who don't need fussy decor and aren't going to spend much time in the room anyway
- Tiny bathrooms but with clean, powerful and good facilities that will do the trick
The DVD rental system (rent a DVD coupon from the box in the hallways and use it with your TV system to watch a movie) is confusing and has an bizarre selection, but this isn't the kind of hotel you want to spend hours in anyway. The AC/heating controller may require a bit of fiddling to find your most comfortable settings but they're fine once you've figured it out.
Location-wise, while some people might not particularly like the atmosphere in the nearby linked arcade, the hotel is very close to the entrance of the arcade so you aren't nestled deep within it. The dressed up girls and night-spot hagglers won't hassle you if you're not interested so they're not a bother, and to us they just added to the atmosphere anyway. The arcade means that there's plenty of eats nearby even if it's late-night from ramen and katsu eateries where you place your order via vending machine then receive sit-down service to Italian restaurants and other great Japanese munchies, and plenty of Takoyaki stalls if you're a fan. Bars, clubs and other watering holes within stumbling distance are convenient and each has a different vibe so there's bound to be at least one that suits your mood, and if you're keen on pachinko and other games there's plenty of that nearby as well. There's also a convenience store literally right next to the hotel, which is very handy. Despite the vibrant nightlife in the location, it wasn't noisy in our room whether from the street or other guests, which was great.
When you're ready to get out and explore beyond the arcade (which we also highly recommend), it's right across the road from Hep Five (and its great ferris wheel - try it at night for a fab view!), which is super convenient, and is also a hop and a skip away from a major subway hub which makes it really easy (and quick) when you want to get around town and explore all of Osaka. There are also loads of great restaurants nearby (including one exceptional Okonomiyaki restaurant) within quick walking distance from the arcade.
It's not the kind of place I'd suggest for someone fussy or people who expect more than the basic needs out of a hotel or for someone looking for comfort, or for my 62 year old mother for instance, but if you need a cheap and cheerful no-frills spot that's clean, comfortable and in a great location, it will definitely tick all the right boxes. We were happy with it anyway!
