“Lovely hotel in a good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2012

Having visited KL several times in the past, we decided to stay at the Royal Chulan this time and we are so pleased we did. The staff at the reception when we arrived were so friendly and helpful. The rooms were immaculate and the breakfasts excellent. We spent some time by the pool which was quiet and well laid out. The location was about 10 minutes walk to the Petronas Towers. I will definitely stay here next time we visit KL.

“Great hotel with wonderful service... fit for royalty!”

Hotels in KL are more expensive than I expected so I had been looking around to find a nice hotel, at a decent price. At 130 SGD per night for this 5 star hotel, I didn't need to look any further. I knew we would not be able to have breakfast on our last day due to a very early flight, so I asked if we could switch that breakfast to our arrival day instead. They kindly agreed and so it was a great start to our stay.

The hotel is nicely laid out. The pool is outdoors on the second floor with a view to the top of the Petronas Towers. There were sufficient lounge chairs around the pool and towels are provided at the pool area. We were offered a key to hang out at the pool until our room was ready but we headed to the Batu Caves instead.

Breakfast was one of the best I've experienced. A huge buffet with every kind of cuisine imaginable. Eggs to order, waffles, pancakes, Malaysian, Indian, Japanese, traditional American, breads, fruits, juices, nuts and many things I'm sure I am forgetting. We literally spent about an hour and half at breakfast enjoying it all, taking our time and trying everything. On both days there was no need for lunch since breakfast was so fulfilling. We also ate at the dinner buffet one night, and while it was also good we felt it a little overpriced and would not eat there again for dinner. We didn't try any of the other hotel restaurants.

The rooms are lovely. I had a king bed with no balcony and to my surprise it had a view over the Petronas Towers! The bed was huge and the room had somewhat formal furnishings, but it still looked modern and clean. The bathrooms are great. The tub was a little small, but big enough for a soak after a long day of walking. A lovely rain shower was a huge hit with my husband. The shower leaked all over the bathroom floor both mornings though. I did tell the reception this and hope it gets fixed. Safe was in the room and there was enough storage space for our needs.

There were sufficient English TV channels, but both my husband and I did find the TV a tad small for such a large room. A minor point I know, but thought I would mention anyways.

The hotel is nicely located near Pavillion Mall and a long-ish stroll to the Petronas Towers. Bukit Bintang is also not far for shopping, night life etc. Check in/out was very smooth and prompt, front desk staff were friendly. All hotel staff were friendly in fact, everyone I passed smiled and greeted me in the halls. The lobby is impressive and I've never seen such shiny marble floors! Not a lot of seating as others have mentioned but the layout is pretty and manages to remain bright.

Concierge is knowledgeable and helped with some suggestions on getting places etc. One thing to note, if you have an early morning flight and require a taxi, do book with the concierge the night before. We thought taxis were available at all times of the day but almost got stranded at 5:30 in the morning while waiting for one to arrive. We would have missed our flight if a nice taxi had not taken us to the train station while he waited for his guests to come downstairs. We had discussed our departure time with the concierge before this, but they did not advise us to book a taxi in advance. Hopefully the hotel advises guests of this in the future. Also to note, the taxis the hotel uses are the 'blue' Executive ones and are pricier than the budget guys. You can walk to the main road and hail a budget taxi for a cheaper fare, if you manage to get him to actually use the meter.

I was both surprised and impressed by the Royale Chulan. I tend to have high expectations of hotels when the reviews are so good. This one met them all. There are minor things that can be improved, but all in all it was wonderful and I would not hesitate to stay there when in KL again.

During my stay, the King of Malaysia was having a formal dinner to celebrate his anniversary and we actually saw him arrive by police escort. All of this went on without any interruption to service for the other hotel guests. I considered myself a little special to be staying at a hotel with royalty :) Give this place a try, it really is a great value.

“Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Kuala Lumpur”

We went to Kuala Lumpur, for 2 nights, in between China and Cambodia as a way of saving lots of money on airfares instead of flying directly between the two countries.. My husband and I have been to KL before many years ago, but this was our son's first time. We had intended to show our son a few sights, however we loved this hotel so much that we stayed there most of the time. The outside of the hotel has a Malaysian look, rather than a tower block that could have been in any city. The marbled entrance is very impressive. We were ungraded to a better room and it was just beautiful with an incredible view of the Petronas Towers. The breakfast was amazing - the largest selection I've every seen. You would need to stay there for weeks to try everything. Very nice swimming pool. We are actually planning a trip to Malaysia next year because we want to return to this hotel. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in KA.

“Superb hotel in lovely location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2012

I agree with Mr-Big Cat. This is a lovely hotel. Right next to the Craft centre so you can begin the Non-Stop Bus Tour there and return to the hotel at the end of the day. The spa is excellent and facilities are superb. Spacious rooms where you can lie in the bath and watch television, though goodness knows why you would want to in this city. The metro is a short distance away - less than 1 km, if desired. Catch a taxi a little way away from the hotel if you don't want to pay fixed prices. Lovely food and great service.

“Excellent value in big city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2012

I've been to KL many times. This is the first place I've stayed and the only place I've stayed since. For the price, the location, service, room and breakfast can't be beaten. I'm not sure why you would look anywhere else?

Room Tip: Overlooking pool as they have a balcony.
