“Paragon Tower, a mid range Manila hotel with near-budget prices”

If you're going to stay in the Ermita area, the Paragon Tower is a good choice. It's located on quiet Flores Street, one block from UN Avenue, one of the more upscale Ermita areas. It also a short walk to the big Robinson's mall. The U.S. Embassy is close, as is the Manila Bay Baywalk, Rizal Park and Intramuros. The rooms are large and nicely furnished. The bathrooms are basic but adequate. Ours had a new and fairly quiet Panasonic air con unit, not a noisy old rattletrap AC. The Paragon is not the Ritz-Carlton at a lower price but it offers decent, secure accommodations at a reasonable price. Our ratings compare the Paragon to other mid-price hotels, not the Ritz. Our floor (7th) had free wi-fi.

The hotel staff were nice (as most Filipinos are) but were not especially knowledgeable about restaurants. The Ermita area can be a little shocking to foreign visitors. The streets and sidewalks are rough, there are girlie bars, homeless people sleeping on the sidewalks and beggars. You may not want to wander around at night by yourself. Head one block north to UN Ave and the situation is better. If you walk in any other direction the neighborhoods are gritty. It's cheap to take a taxi to your restaurant or Robinson's Mall. Speaking of restaurants in this area, we like the Shawarma Snack Center, a Middle Eastern Restaurant on Salas Street, four or five blocks from the hotel.

In general, we find Ermita to be a little less dull and more economical than the more upscale parts of Makati.

You'll save money by booking your room through booking.com rather than through the hotel website. For example we booked a family room (two king beds) for P3,300 through booking.com whereas the same room at the Paragon's is P3,808. Both include breakfast. Ask for a room on the upper floors, 7th floor or above, and you may get nice views of the city and maybe even a glimpse of Manila Bay.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 7th floor or higher for a view. Since Flores Street is quiet, all rooms should be...

Everything is great except the Restaurant and Internet Connection. I would suggest that the hotel will provide WIFI connections every floor. I would stay there soon.

“Uncomfortable rooms”

LOCATION. We were trying to choose a hotel close to major sights including Intramuros. That's why we booked a room in the Paragon Tower hotel in the district of Ermita. The location appeared to be rather disputable. It's relatively close to Intramuros (you should consider that Manila is quite a big city so distances in the real life appear much longer than they looked on a map). A very good shopping center named Robinson's Place is located just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. From the other hand, Ermita is a poor district and there are a lot of people sleeping in the streets by nights. So the location doesn't look secure enough.

STAFF. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Except restaurant maybe.

ROOMS. Rooms are awful. Tile floor is cold so you should wear slippers. Furniture is shabby. There is no safe box in the room. Outside the window near conditioner block we have found some cigarette butts and old panties on a dress hanger. :) Towels in the bathroom were grey instead of white.

BREAKFAST. The restaurant room is dark and depressive. We have met some cockroaches there! There is no buffet breakfast in the hotel, only continental breakfast. Omelet and pancakes were rather delicious at the same time but we were a bit afraid of sanitary conditions of their kitchen (remember cockroaches?).

GENERAL IMPRESSION. The hotel appeared to be an unpleasant surprise for us after reading excellent reviews here on Tripadvisor. I would recommend to look for better options. But if you are staying for 1 night and not going to spend time in the hotel, than it's maybe ok for you.

“Basic and efficient, clean and simple”

We were back in Manila to oblige a last minute wedding invitation and we wanted a basic hotel to do the usual shopping and attend the wedding. Paragon came at a descent price and we expected an old but functional place but instead we were pleasantly surprised to get a room on a newly renovated floor. The room itself was newly refurbished, tiled with basic furnishing and amenities. Some drawbacks about this place was the location (a backstreet in Ermita), the hotel tower shares the building with some employment agency (crowded lifts) and hot drinking water only available on request (no complementary heater jug).

“comfortable and clean”

I stayed for 5 nights, enjoyed the breakfast in the mornings at the top of the hotel. The room had a refrigerator which was nice. The shower always provided hot water. The tub was okay. It was a good location for visiting what I had not seen since 1985 when I last visited Manila. Staff was always friendly. I used a nearby internet cafe which was handy.
My female friend whom I met on the internet 9 months earlier selected this location and I was quite satisfied with her choice. I liked being on an upper floor to view the city. the elevator worked very well.
