I have stayed at many b&bs and travel to the Asheville area somewhat regularly. My partner and I bought a voucher for a one night stay to the Blake House because we found out it is dog-friendly and we wanted to bring our 2 dogs. And this place totally delivered!
It was a very pleasant surprise to find a b&b that not just dog-tolerant, but quite friendly. And instead of be relegated to a cottage or some place outside the historical inn, they have 5 rooms in the house that accommodate dogs.
For my partner and me, we were treated with respect and kindness. Amber and Leslie spent extra time with us answering our questions and explaining about the history of the house. The kind of personal service they gave is far and above anything we've experienced at a hotel. Both recommended Frankie Bones which is dog-friendly and close to the inn. Highly recommend!
Breakfasts - more than filling, especially the quiche. It was so light and fluffy.
Room - spacious with 12 foot high ceilings. Our bathroom just had a shower, but it totally met our needs with a hair dryer, lots of bath amenities and comfy robes. I prefer more room space than bathroom space, understanding that older houses usually mean that bathrooms are not original and need to be added. It's much better than sharing a bathroom which we've done at other b&bs.
The decorative touches are unique and not intrusive or in the way. Our room was clean and the bed had a memory foam mattress pad, making it heaven for me to sleep with a bad back.
We enjoyed glasses of sparkling cider on the front porch and a sweet visit from the cat. To say the least, we were pleasantly surprised all around. The price was economical and we didn't mind a 15 minute drive to downtown. If your only goal is to stay in downtown, then I recommend a hotel, but Asheville is so much more than the downtown area that visitors should expect to drive all over the place. It's in the mountains.
Alternative accommodations for dogs are limited and the cost to be even 5-10 minutes closer to downtown, in my opinion, is not worth the extra $50-$100 per night, plus size restrictions and higher pet fees.
Blake House is truly a hidden gem and we have already started plans for a return visit.
