My husband and I travel to Asheville every year and we normally stay at a B&B close to downtown with our dog, but it was booked. So, we called Blake House, even though it is not as close to downtown as we normally stay.
From the first phone call, I was very pleased with the Innkeeper and how informative she was. She convinced us that Arden is not that far from downtown and that SOuth Asheville offers many of the great restaurants and walking areas that are found in Montford.
When we arrived, we were greated by the Innkeeper, who lives on the property with her dogs and cats. The tour she gave us around the house was a lot more than we normally get and there is a park for the dog next to the property. We found that the neighborhood, though busy, is relatively quiet and recommend a room on the patio side of the house since they are the most quiet.
The innkeeper has recently gotten this beautiful old house on the National Register and she has been collecting information and articles for the guests to read. The ceilings are tall and the hardwood floors are original, although there are some spots that could use a good sanding.
We couldn't believe that the Innkeeper maintains the house, the gardens, the cooking, etc. mostly by herself (I think she has a housekeeper and help form a family member), but we were duly impressed. She even spent some time talking to us about innkeeping since we've always thought about buying our own someday. Her frankness and willingness to share was refreshing.
Our dog Lucy really enjoyed the bed and toys in our room and the dog treats that were available (we stayed in the Dogwood). Overall, we had a great stay and now have the dilema of deciding which B&B to return to on our next visit because we love them both, for different reasons!
