It was a good thing that we arrived after dark and could not see the "resort", otherwise I probably would have asked my wife if we could leave on the same ferry we came in on. We booked Panuba Inn based on the photos at the Mersing Ferry Terminal after a last-minute decision to travel to Tioman. Boarded the last ferry of the day at 6:30pm on 19 May 2012 and arrived abour 8:45pm. First impression of the exterior of the chalets and reception: quaint. Rate was RM135 which included an air-cond room with hot shower, and a buffet breakfast. Was required to pay an RM20 deposit for towels and RM10 for room key. O...K....
We hadn't eaten in Mersing so were famished by the time we got to Panuba. We ate at the restaurant before making our way to our room. The food (I ordered the black pepper beef with rice, while my wife had mixed tom yam with rice and mixed veg) was tastelss in my case, and only average in my wife's case.
Got to our room and was disappointed with the condition. While the bedroom and bathroom were clean, there was no excuse for all of the mold on the bathroom ceiling. Yuck! TV reception was so poor they may as well not have had one. The bed linen, although clean, consisted of just the bedsheets and a light blanket. The room also had a problem with ants, which, although they never came our way, were annoying nonetheless.
Awoke to a WONDERFUL sunrise and GREAT view of the surrounding area! Those, and the crystal clear ocean, are the best things about the place. The beach, such as it was consisted of maybe 100 feet of sand in front of the restaurant. As boats passed by, their wakes would create high waves on the shore. Not sure how anyone could really enjoy such a place. The buffet breakfast was pitiful: just nasi goreng kampung, noodles, toast, and coffee or tea. Nothing at all to take care of a hearty appetite.
We asked if there were any other beaches around and were directed to a path that led to a beach about 5 minutes away. Along the side of the path were all kinds of garbage and old appliances. The area is in serious need of a clean up. We got to the other beach, which was deserted. Was disappointed to find not much sand but a lot of coral.
There is nothing to do at this resort if you are not a diver. Trips to other places on Tioman from Panuba are expensive and won't get you back to the resort in time to catch the ferry back to the mainland. We were supposed to leave on the 4pm ferry, but found ourselves taking the 11am ferry instead due to a lack of things to do at Panuba.
Biggest disappointments were the condition of the chalets, the poor food, and lack of things to do. It's just not worth what we paid to stay there. Owners either don't care about making improvements, or maybe don't have the $ to do so. Pluses are the scenery and the beautiful water. Give this place a pass if you have claustrophobia and need more things and space to do them in...
