“Good value resort with very responsive reception”

We stayed at Salang Pusaka resort during our dive trip in August. The resort had actually been chosen and arranged by our dive center and we agreed as the other hotels which had sea view where already fully booked.
The room (double with space even for a third bed) was nice and clean with AC. We had some trouble with water leakage, hot water boiler not working and AC, but all issues were attended to very promptly and to our satisfaction.
The only disappointing bit of the resort is the restaurant which had very erratic opening hours in the morning - so dont count on breakfast ! The fact there there are very little breakfast alternatives on the island adds to the issue.... We skipped breakfast every day as a result ! I recommend to go and buy food in one of the small supermarkets and hence make your own breakfast!
Note the hotel does not seem to have access to beach and hence if you want room with sea view and access to beach you need to check out the other resorts...

“basic but comfortable enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

We stayed ad Khalid's place twice, first time about 7 years ago. Being a family of four, we reserved a deluxe bungalow on both occasions. It was no way deluxe accomodation, but quite functional and anything in the room (AC, hot water supply, a small old fridge) worked well. Rates are reasonable and we also got a small discount which was good! Staff are friendly and polite, and there's a good attached restaurant.

“A pleasant corner of paradise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

We came to Salang Pusaka Resort in some desperation, our reserved room at Salang Sayang having been given to someone else. The receptionist was very polite and helpful and found a room for us despite it being the busy Hari Raya weekend.

The room was adequate and cheap: air conditioning, en suite bathroom, comfortable beds. Not luxurious, but a perfect place to sleep after a long day diving, sunbathing and jungle trekking.

The attached restaurant is excellent. The best place to eat in Salang. The BBQ food is delicious, as is the fare prepared in the kitchen. Staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is lively and fun. Very cheap also.

“Khalids restaurant promotes killing of sharks”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011

We have recently visited Tioman Island for the second time in 9 years. Last time we stayed at Khalids Place, but this time we chose to stay instead at Salang Puteri Inn, which is further back from the beach and has a quiet garden setting. Puteri Inn is similar to Khalids and I found the staff more friendly and prices more reasonable. However we had dinner at Khalids restaurent a few times, and I had some issues with them that I believe is noteworthy. Firstly , I must say that the food was quite good, BUT, what we had problems with was the fact that this restaurant proudly served stingrays and white tip reef sharks on their menu, some not much bigger than the palm of your hand. These are exactly the kind of sealife we would like to see alive underwater, and only place we saw them, in two weeks of diving, was dead on a plate in this restaurant. It is supposed to be a marine park and I feel it is a total disgrace, that the owners of this establishment, blatantly promotes destroying exactly what people are coming to see . We have spoken to the people at the restaurant about it and they basically did not care, claiming it was not them who killed the fish, but the fisherman. The other issue we had with Khalids was that they have a big screen and showing any kind of movie, even early in the evening. Salang is frequented by families. Our own kids are all below 10 yrs of age and we found that from 7:30pm onwards, movies were shown which were definitely not appropriate for a family restaurant. When we requested changing the movie (there were only people at 3 tables at this time) the waiter and duty manager started a heated argument with us and wanted to call the police. We never supported this place again and suggest anyone with moral standards and love for sealife to do the same.

“so-so”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2011

Me and another 4 friends decided to stay in salang because the reviews said it has the nicest beach in tioman. however the beach isn't that wide but enough for swimming and snorkeling.

we stayed at two deluxe rooms. the one i got was rather lousy and smelly. the mattress was awful, it was a very old mattress with springs in it. i had terrible back pain after staying for two nights there maybe due to my prolapsed disc problem i suffered months ago. if you happen to get this kind of bed, do complaint and get it replaced. however, my friends' room was much better. the beds were all in a good condition. nothing much to complaint though. i guess it was just me and my roommate being the unlucky ones :)

there were water heater, dressing table, bed, fridge and sofa table.

the staff was a little helpful though. there were mosquitoes at night thus we couldn't sleep. i asked for a mosquito repellent and he gave it eventhough not instantly.

there was one time where there was no water when i wanted to take a shower. i called the staff and he said the water piping was under maintenance. however i had to wait only around 10 mins.

we had bbq at the restaurant. it was quite good. i believe the restaurant is the most happening place at night, with good music, and big screen to watch tv and you may get the chance to see the cook dancing happily with his ladle in his hand.

this resort isn't facing the beach but it's only a few walks away.

my advice is try to find any other resort with better condition if you want a comfortable place. salang pusaka isn't the one for you. but if you're that type who isn't that fussy or just finding a place to sleep, this can be a choice for you.

tioman island is indeed a very good place to go for snorkeling. remember to negotiate before you take any snorkeling trip. malaysians are friendly. :)

Room Tip: Avoid Room 44.
